It’s difficult to fully clean and disinfect a wood hutch. The wood absorbs liquids and odors. Can you switch the housing to something more suitable like a dog xpen or cube condo with plastic or linoleum flooring?

i cant my dad made the hutch December/January and it’s built into the shed so we cant take it out, i wanted to get rid of the smell in the bedding area and put a cover down as benji likes to use the bedding area as a toilet no matter what we do. i read somewhere that white vinegar and baking soda is good for wooden hutches but I’m not sure about it

Instead of trying to clean the bedding area to stop him excreting there, why not shop somewhere like poundland and pick up a kitty litter tray? Line it with newspaper for absorbency and throw some hay in for noms; just clean it daily or every other day. I used to live in England, and that was the solution for my Snowbell!

I scrub mine with water and dishsoap (like dawn). It might be a good idea to stop using the bedding if your bun insists on peeing on it. He probably is confused that there is bedding everywhere and not just in the litter box. Nessie is normally pretty good but sometimes she gets in a mood and pees on the floor

Could you at least cover the wood with some linoleum to prevent further damage?

my dad said he was going to ask some lads at work to make a tray to put in there but he cant ask until tomorrow. i was just wondering if there was a way to get rid of the smell really but it seems that the two girls just go anywhere whilst benji at least goes to the bedding area.

Vinegar and water (50/50) should help a lot. If I were to do it, I would spray the area several times, allowing it to soak into the wood. It should take the smell away

Edit to add: Vinegar and baking soda will help too, but be aware it is going to fizz like crazy, you’d also need to hose it down to remove it all.  I think it’s a good idea, but I’d also spray the vinegar/water mix and let it soak in.  Consider the kitty litterbox in that corner too, with the bedding only in that area.

Try doing the vinegar solution and a light sand. Depending on if it has any bunny-safe finish, it might take care of it. I got a secondhand hutch to re-purpose for indoors and had no problem getting rid of the smell with a light sand. I didn’t mind the light sand spots and neither does he!
