Pfeffer, My flemish giant is going in to be spayed Monday morning, and I am very nervous,

I had the boy neutered about a month ago, and his recovery was a breeze (grumpy for an afternoon…then eating and playing like normal), but everything i’m reading is telling me that it will take a lot longer for the girl.

How long did it take for your bunny to recover from her spay?

Any hints about how I can make her more comfortable/speed up the healing?

Thank for any help! (I think we will be fine, I’m just a fretter)

I got my Flemmie girl, Leia, spayed a couple of weeks ago and it went great! She was groggy and didn’t have her usual gluttonous appetite for 2 days, but after just a couple days she was back to normal! Even tried some binkying (even though that didn’t work to well for her)! She recovered fine, didn’t need pain meds and never bothered her stitches. Good luck with ur girls spay, I hope it goes well!

I had a Flemish giant girl before. She was fine after her spaying too (she got it done at the shelter we adopted her from. Brought her home a couple of days after the surgery). We weren’t given any meds for her and she was just great! Every bunny is different though so be mindful to that…but don’t be too concerned. If she doesn’t eat or drink or if you see irregularities in her poop..go to the vet immediately.

We have another bunny now…just got him neutered..he doesn’t want his med but he seems to be OK. He’s going to the vet anyway to be checked over.

Keep them warm and quiet, give them a small area filled with beds and other soft things. Keep the cage very clean to prevent infection, and offer your bun her favourite foods before and after her spay.

I would ask for pain meds to administer at home… If she doesn’t need them, then great… But it’s better to have on hand, especially for the first few days when she’s going to be uncomfortable. Spays are invasive and the recovery is more involved than with boys where it’s just a simple “snip-snip”…

My bunny was spayed 3 weeks ago and she had an issue before hand and she did great! I’d say the first 2 days she was groggy but by the 2nd night she went practically back to normal. To make her more comfortable you can put soft blankets/bedding in her cage. Mine was also given pain meds which might’ve made the recovery faster. Dont expect her to eat for a while but do ask for critical care incase she doesn’t eat in the first 24 hours. Another important thing is to watch out for the stitches, mine kept wanting to lick the area so just keep an eye on her.

For the first 24 hours my sisters and i rotated watching her; we watched her like a hawk!
And for the next few days i slept downstairs with her. This was b/c my rabbit’s condition was more critical- she had lost lots of weight bc of blood clots. But I am sure you and your bun will do just fine. Good luck!

Thanks for all the advice everyone!
Miss Pfeffer is home and doing wonderfully…although I think she will be hamming it up a little just to get more lettuce 🙂

                      Yay!
It is a good thing she wants to eat!

Hello! I’m new here and just got my Flemish giant. Her name is layla and I was wondering if I need to spay her cause the owner that I bought her from said since she’s a girl I don’t have to spay her.

I Stephanie, we ask that members do not pull up and reply to old posts – better for you to start your own post anyway with a question.

Yes, you need to spay her – rabbits have a 50 to 80% chance of uterine cancer.

I am going to lock this thread – please start a new thread if you have any further questions :~)
