I have no idea HOW most of you have carpet under your bunnies! How do you do it?

I have hard wood floors and some rugs. Now before letting my bun have more “free roaming room” I wanted to introduce her to rugs. so I put some in her cage  and she just pee’s on it, not a full pee, but a small territory pee. So, I took it out.. but maybe I shouldn’t have..??How did you all get your bun’s to not pee on carpet!?  She is spayed.

I was thinkings of start with a super small piece and maybe put her veggies on top of it, then making it bigger and bigger and bigger.

How did you all do it?

I may not be much help since my bun’s free roam/xpen area is covered with thick fabric and not a rug. I noticed he likes to tear up rugs and bathmats that have long fibers, so I avoid giving him things like that. So you may want to avoid those kind of rugs as they’re soft and plush. I feel short fiber rugs or berber carpet would be best. You can get sample tiles or even rug sized scraps from some carpet stores.

I would like to know the exact same thing. Lola pees everywhere on carpet, rugs, blankets, and fabric but WILL NOT move if on a smooth surface.

I have wood floors in my home, except where Bumpy’s pen is erected. There I have a shower curtain down with an indoor/outdoor no-pile area rug. Prior to his neuter he did pee near his box on the carpet, but being no-pile and on the shower curtain, I could easily vinegar/water soak it and sponge it up. Now he never pees on it, though still the occasional poo balls! I DO have to watch his microfiber towel “babies”. He’ll do fine with them most of the time, but sometimes if they are spread out just right(?) he’ll pee on them.

I picked up the 8ftx6ft area rug from Lowe’s for a little under $20.

Some buns just pee on soft surfaces… Our bunny pen is on carpet and I can count on one hand the pee accidents that have occurred over the last 7 years… All accidents have been only during times of illness or in the very, very early stages of bonding. I didn’t have to do anything, just gave a litter box or two and they knew where to go.

If your bun pees on the carpet, I’d probably just have her on a solid surface, maybe with a blanket that can be washed as needed.

Does she have accidents outside of her pen too?

Well, you added a new rug to her area, of course she’s going to pee on it to mark it as hers. My two don’t pee on carpet, but they will on anything soft I add to their home.

Beka, She does not have accidents outside outside of her pen, ever. The only time was when she has an UTI, but thats cleared up a long while ago.
Maybe I should just put carpet in there even if she does pee, clean it and just hope she learns to go in her litter box regardless. I just didn’t want to start any bad habits… wasn’t sure how everyone else does it! but I guess if you start on carpet they just know its not the potty!

Sounds like a good idea. If you have a little water squirt bottle, you can put 50/50 water/vinegar mix in there (label the bottle with Sharpie marker) and use that to spray pee accidents and then blot up the excess. Over time, you should hopefully see fewer pee accidents.

I think some of it is just luck – whether the bunny has great litter habits or not. Some will always be tempted to pee on absorbent surfaces.

My female will mark a bit, but I just cleaned it up a bit with vinegar/water and ignored it (my rugs are cheap, so I don’t care if they stain). After a couple weeks she stopped, and it was never soaking pee.

If a bunny is fully peeing on the carpet, not just marking, I would get rid of the carpet and work on litter habits on a hard surface first.

So a week after posting here… I wake up to having to spot clean the carpet beside the litterbox. Admittedly, I had “change the litterbox” on the list of first thing to do when I got up this morning, but it seems I didn’t get up early enough?

Either way.. HUGE pee spot, that required double cleaning. So… yea, he’s not against peeing on the carpet!
