Hello all, I usually browse and I was planning to introduce myself in happier circumstances but I have a bit of a situation. I apologize in advance for making a new thread as I think my rabbit has similar issues to ChibbysMom but it’s a little different and I’m a bit freaked out.

I’m located in Bakersfield, CA and after calling 4 different 24/hr emergency vet locations from here and LA I can’t find any “exotic” vets on duty and just a general uncaring attitude concerning my bun including the “no ma’am all of our doctors treat exotics” when I tried to explain I needed a rabbit-savvy one.

-Anyway, my girl Mei was fine this morning but after we got home she started getting extremely lethargic, she generally dislikes me putting a hand near her tummy but now I can literally lift her up a bit that way and she won’t budge. She’s barely eaten a thing unless I stick it in her face and hasn’t drank much either. My spouse and I fed her(well attempted) some critical care but only two syringes worth. I also gave her a belly massage and didn’t hear or see the signs of pain or issues with her tummy other than a small, normal gurgle.

like ChibbysMom, it’s gotten warm here lately but we keep the house at 76 degrees, Mei has started a super heavy shed so I’ve been grooming her every day trying to keep it controllable but I’m worried she ingested too much? All my buns have a very healthy oxbow diet and healthy treats too. An extra odd thing to note is she’s a Silver Marten but one ear recently dropped like a lop rabbit? I heard this could be due to heat so we’re wondering if she’s overheated? We’ve kept an eye on it but there’s no sign of infection or pain in the ear and she doesn’t feel overly warm than normal in any way.

Sorry for the wall of text but any help of any kind would be very appreciated. It’s so hard to reach good vets around here even during the day and I worry it’ll be too late before I can contact one. Going to try to reach someone after work tomorrow if possible.

I’m sorry your buns is unwell.

Is she feeling any better today? If not, I’m hoping you can get her into a vet during business hours. If you absolutely can’t find an exotic vet, any vet could at least give her fluids which may help, if they are willing to see her.

I doubt it’s the heat, because that’s really not that hot. It could be a touch of gas or something blocking her GI tract.

You can try giving some Simethicone (baby gas drops). The dose is 1ml every hour for 3 hours and 1ml every few hours after that. This may help and can’t hurt at least.

If she is willing to let you touch her tummy gentle massaging may also help… Circular motions and stroking down the sides. Some very aromatic herbs like Basil or Coriander, parsley or dill well soaked in water…clean her litter trays so you can monitor if she is pooping and peeing… mean while make an appointment to get her in as soon as possible some where.

Thank you both for the advice, I gave her another good belly massage before bed last night and this morning she’s back to normal! I checked her litter box and she passed a pretty large “log” and I’m pretty sure that included a bit of hair. She was back to her normal eating habits but we’ll be picking up some gas drops today just in case and some basil, dill, etc. since she loves those
that was seriously the scariest night I’ve had in a long time. I plan to continue the daily grooming routine and she should be fine, I think her shed for summer is almost done anyway. Thanks for the support!

I’m glad she’s feeling better! Those sensitive bunny tummies can really be a worry to us sometimes.

                  Glad she is feeling better!
I hope you find a good vet for future use.
