Hello all I am a soon to be parent of a beautiful black standard rex kit for the first time (after I kid you not 6 months of research). She won’t be here until the 1st but we have everything except a condo for her (we have litter pan, pellets, toys galore, hidey hole, blankets, pillows, food dishes, we’ve bunny proofed the boyfriends video game set up). We can’t let her free roam until she’s at least litter trained . And I’m home quite a bit so she’ll be out alot but I still want a nice big place for her that’ll be all her own. My problem is my boyfriend and I really have no access to NIC cubes (they’re too pricey for his taste and our packages get lost more often than not so we prefer not to order online and walmart doesnt carry them here). I have looked at every store here, walmart, tractor supply, ace, etc. And all the cages even outdoor hutches are tiny! Like teeny tiny! Same with the dog crates (apparently store owners here assume chihuahuas are the only dog that lives out here) and absolutely NO xpens either. I know my town sucks. So here’s what I can use basically. Rabbit wire fencing, cage wire, galvanized wire, and chicken wire (this I know is a no no bc the bun could chew it and hurt themselves.) I can also buy wood and wooden dowels both untreated very easily. My question…could I build a safe multi level bunny condo, like the ones made out of nic cubes or similar with these materials? Or do I need to try to make an out of town trip before I go pick my bun up? Please please please help!!! It won’t be wire floor as we already have some scrap carpeting and scrap wood flooring for the floor.

Well what I did was I bought some galvanized hardware mesh and I took a bunch of 2×3’s and we ripped a slit 1 inch deep in the center of each. Then we cut them the right length and put 2 together. Then we cut the mesh the right size slid it into the wood then attached the last pieces to it and made a bunch of panels like this. We then put them together and put doors on floor ramp etc. we made a 4 ft by 2 foot and 4 foot high 2 lvl cage with about 80$ and itsh igh quality and stuff if you would like a picture let me know hope this helped and congrats on a bunny!

My rabbits don’t live in a condo, but I built them an outdoor run type thing with those materials. You definitely can build a rabbit condo with those materials but make sure to cover any sharp parts.
You can probably look on youtube for how to build a rabbit condo but use the materials you have. Mabey if you want your bun to have more space to run around, you can build a run/x-pen with your leftover material and attach it to the condo.

I have both an X-pen set up and a condo set up. Honestly, I am starting to prefer the x-pen set up more. It’s much easier to clean and manage feed, ect. We had none of the things required to build either set up. I decided to invest in a trip out of town for the condo supplies. I found the cubes at target, however, half of the grids are useless so you end up buying more. The second time we bought the grids, I ordered from amazon. I got the boards for the floors cut at a home depot. You just tell them the measurements and they will do any cut. For the x-pen set up, I did the same for the board floor. I got the X-pen from amazon, and zipties for both setups will be at any home improvement/farm store. Hope this helps!

Also, I find that you really need to watch what type of flooring you use int he condo. Ashe slips off shelves occasionally when she doesn’t quite make a jump because we have slippery tiles in there. We move in 2 weeks so I will be doing a re-vamp.

Wow!!! Thank you so much for the replies!!! As an update the animal shelter I volunteer at informed me one of shadows siblings isnt getting adopted after all so after sneakily having the boyfriend come in to “help” with something I now am going to have two bunnies comimg home with me on the first!!! (No one can resist bunny cutesiness!) And the shelter has donated a medium dog crate to me for my buns and a friend of mine has some great cage wire she’s going to sell us so im going to do the xpen kinda idea attached to the crate and just add more room and levels onto the dog crate. So looks like ill be meshimg all these ideas together.
P.S. such a warm welcome here thanks guys!!!!
Also went to a friends who has a nic cube cage for hherguinea….they seem kinda flimsy compared to wire…did she just have cheapie ones?
