My wife recently brought home 2 baby bunnies. Californian and New Zealand mixed. I used an old pie safe to make a condo out of. It is 4 story’s which include the actual floor of our home. The question I have is, it will be on carpet and I don’t want them on the carpet so I was thinking of putting it on plywood. Would the wood itself be good flooring and easy to clean or would I need to put something like laminate which I really don’t want to do that. I am just wanting to know a pretty cheap flooring option for the plywood. Or even put some type of water proofing on top of the plywood.

Welcome – I do have to wonder if this pie safe in the future will be adequate once they are grown as these rabbits can be very large – is this just temporary while they are young?

I would say you can look for some vinyl at Home Depot or Lowes for the flooring that is cheap and not carpet keeping in mind though that rabbits generally do not do well on slick surfaces and it can cause sore hocks and joint problems in the future because rabbits cannot gain traction on these types of flooring (much like plastc bottom cages) but you can put some cheap carpeting over this to help them with their traction.

I have to say that I really love the bigger rabbits like Californians and NZ’s and have had quite a few. They are great rabbits.

Wood will absorb the pee and rot I would suggest putting vynil on top of the wood with bathtub stickies for traction. Or you can get scraps from a carpet store either free or fairly cheap that way the bunnies arent ruining your carpet and you can throw away and replace or clean the scrap carpet. You could also put a baby blanket down for traction and so you buns have something soft to rest on to prevent sore hocks.
I also think you might need something bigger. I recently got some help with ideas to make a very nice cage out of rabbit fencing wire which is fairly inexpensive at hardware stores. You can either build a 4 wall cage or just set the fencing up in a circle like an xpen fairly easily with some wood and zip ties or j clamps. This way you can easily expand or modify the cage as your bunnies grow.
I’m new to bunnies too band there’s alot of good info on this forum. Hope I helped
