Hi everyone. I just found out that both of my rabbits have sore hocks. I am not sure how long they have had them for though. They don’t look infected but they are quite large and very red. One of my bunnies thumps her feet ALOT and I am not sure why the other one got them. Maybe from him sitting in his litter box to long? They lived on a plush rug with a bed sheet on top of it. My vet is not very experienced with rabbits but she said to change the flooring to just hay. Any advice on how to help cure the sore’s. I have been putting Preparation-H on them twice a day, but that doesn’t seem to be doing much.

        Thanks for the help.

I don’t think Prep H is going to help. I’ve used silvadene which I’ve gotten from the vet’s. Hopefully you can find a vet with more experience than this one.

I think that rabbits who aren’t free roam tend to have more of this problem than free roam rabbits too. I don’t think changing the flooring to hay is the answer and probably quite expensive too.

Are you keeping their nails trimmed?

Here’s a good article on this as well that may help:

Thanks for the help Sarita. I didn’t really think that hay would really help their feet but do you think fleece would? What flooring do your rabbits have? I feel really bad for my bunnies. I used to cut their nails once a month but I read that indoor rabbits should have their nails cut every 2-3 weeks. I have 2 rabbits that live in an x-pen that is about 8ftx6ft and they get to run outside for about 1 hour every day and they get to free range in their room about 2 hours every day.

Also do you think it might help if I soak their feet in epsom salt?

I’ve never tried epsom salts but I’ve tried applying warm, wrung out tea bags 2x daily for a few minutes. Just regular black tea bags. I read this was good for toughening up the callouses. Can’t say how much it helped, but it didn’t hurt any to try.

When my buns had mild sore hocks, the miracle for me was “Snoozzy mats”. After fitting their condos with these mats, both buns hocks got better and haven’t been sore again since. I highly recommend them to any sore hocks prone bunnies.
