I called my vet this morning because Lola’s little bunny bum has been really wet the last couple of days. She wants me to see if I can get Lola to pee in an empty litter box so I can get a urine sample. How in the world am I going to get her to do that when she goes absolutely still when she is on a smooth surface???? Ugh…..this is going to be like when we decided to put her in an xpen in the dining room because she keeps peeing all over the carpet in the living room. She just sat in the middle of the pen and wouldn’t move. I did put a rug in there so she would have somewhere to lay down but she wouldn’t put one tiny paw on the floor. Any suggestions?

Well, I decided to put her back in the dining room with an empty litter box. I feel like I am torturing this poor bunny. She is just sitting there in the box staring at me. Part of me wants to put a small towel or a rug down so she has somewhere to lay down but I know she will just pee on it instead of in her box.

That’s a tough one. Sometimes the vet can express their bladder and get a sample if you can’t . I managed to get a sample right after mine peed on newspaper, which isn’t the best, I’m sure, but it more or less worked…if you get it right away, obviously. Mine had the same problem, though I’m waiting and watching because it didn’t seem to continue. Seems to me someone else had this problem, though, and it was a UTI so I hope you have luck. Oh, and I suck it up with a syringe

Hhmm..do you have like a small plastic cup? Dig it into the corner if the litter box she pees in, and cover it with some hay, just enough to hide it. That might work.

What about using a litter screen over the empty litter box?

Well, this works for guinea pigs.
Get a tub with grooves in the bottom to catch the wee. Toss a bit of hay inside, but make sure they are long strands so they won’t contaminate the sample. Give some fresh veggies and wait. It should take less than 15 minutes for you bunny to wee, and when they do, suck it out of the groove in a syringe.

Thanks for the suggestions everybody! I think I will try LBJ and LEL’s suggestions together! I did go and get a couple of syringes from the pharmacy in case I got lucky on Fri but she wouldn’t go. The vet was closed over the weekend but we are back at it today trying again.

….off to find a tub with grooves on the bottom….

Yay! Urine sample obtained and taken in to vet for analysis. Now just have to wait until vet calls to see if she has a UTI.

No UTI but vet wants to do an xray to rule out stones or sludge. It hasn’t happened since those 2 days so maybe it was nothing or whatever it was is gone. Will be doing the xray soon but keeping fingers crossed it’s nothing.

Lola goes in for her xrays in about an hour…I’m a little nervous, I will admit. She hasn’t had a wet bum since but I just don’t want anything to be wrong with her. I want a healthy bunny! Fingers crossed…..
