I have a 10 year old Netherland dwarf rabbit, he’s always been on the skinny side and it’s never been a problem (just the way he is I think). He has a constant supply of pellets (excel) and hay, and veggies are given on a night. He’s recently been Ill (currently on medication by the vet, nothing too serious) but he’s been loosing weight over the last few months. He’s now tiny, just skin and bones, but still eating and poo’ing as normal, does anyone know how I can fatten him up a bit, I’ve heard oats and alfalfa hay can be a good way to add weight? Any other suggestions?

The standard advice is usually to offer alfalfa-based pellets and alfalfa-based hay.

I’ve heard of breeders giving oatmeal to make them fatter / make their coats shinier, but I don’t know a lot about it

There are some supplement type pellets some breeders use, for nursing/sick/baby rabbits, could try that I guess. What did the vet recommend?

Yes, did the vet have any recommendations?

I think if this were my rabbit I would add more pellets and a bit of alfalfa hay. I would not do oats as they are a carbohydrate.

I agree, providing some alfalfa hay in addition to his regular diet is a good idea.

Rabbits are similar to humans (and other species) in that they do tend to thin out as they get older. If he’s eating well and behaving normally, being thin isn’t a problem necessarily. I wouldn’t expect a diet change at his age to put a whole lot of weight on him, but he may gain a few ounces…
