Bella got her first nail trimming today, and she was totally fine with me doing her front feet as she practically fell asleep in my lap while I did it. But then it came down to the back feet. I trim my dogs and cats nails so I’m well aware of the “quick”. I simply couldn’t do this alone so I had my husband hold her while I did the back feet. I got through one foot ok, and then did two on the next back foot but then as I went to trim one last back claw she moved and I almost cut her quick. I didn’t cut it but it was basically right on the line!!!! She didn’t bleed or growl, but the nail snagged a bit because the clippers got it sideways but I went back and fixed it up and filed it down so it’s ok now. But now I feel bad because she’s licking that foot should I worry? she didn’t bleed! and shes walking fine. My husband said maybe its like when we tear one of our nails and it stings a bit because its almost to the quick but not quite there, so we automatically put our finger in our mouth lol what do you guys think?  I just have guilt because her heart was beating so fast she was so scared. It was her first time getting a trim sense I got her. I just feel guilty but I knew I had to trim them because they were getting long!

I’m sure she is fine. I wouldn’t worry too much.

I’m sure she is fine, too. You might have been just a little bit too close, but this happens sometimes…

A long time ago one of our forum leaders, RabbitPam, shared advice about how to test the location of where you’re clipping. Basically, you line up your clipper and press it twice on the nail without actually cutting. On the third press you make the cut. If it’s too close, the bunny will pull away when you press, and you can reposition the clipper.

Bunnies hearts actually beat really fast anyway.
I am sure she is fine.

That only works if your bunny is calm during a clip. Mine try to pull away no matter what when I trim. OP says their bunny moved during the clip, which changed the angle of the clippers on the nail.

It’s fine, even if you make them bleed it’s just sore for a few days. Your husbands comparison is probably pretty accurate. She’ll be a bit sore for a few days, then should be fine. For my squirmy two (especially my male, he HATES his feet being touched) I trim not quite as close as I should, since they are a hassle to line up properly (always jerking their feet away). It means trimming more often, but less hassle when I do trim them. And I am hoping one day they get used to the routine.

Oh good point! I guess I’m just lucky that my buns have always stayed very still for me.

Mine are good for their front feet, but as soon as I touch a back foot, they pull the feet away any time they think they can and stuff it under their tummies for protection lol brats!
