So I got a new baby dutch rabbit yesterday. I ordered a 10lb bag of pellets and 20lb box of hay from smallpetsellect.com on Monday. It was supposed to be here yesterday, but now it says it isn’t coming in until Tuesday of next week

I have a small bag of orchard grass hay I’ve been giving to her, but I don’t know if she is eating a lot of it since the breeder I got her from only fed them pellets. Will she be ok just eating the hay until the pellets get here? Or should I go to the store and pick up a bag of pellets? She is about 7-8 weeks old.

I think she needs pellets too at her age. I would get a small bag of pellets or maybe ask the breeder if you can get a bit from him/her to tide you over till yours comes…

I’ll probably just buy a small bag of cheap food from walmart then. I prefer oxbow, but I dont want to spend $15 on a 5lb bag after I spent $30 on that 10lb bag that should have been here already =/ I don’t think cheap food will hurt just for a few days.

Find out what she was being fed, do NOT just give her any old pellet, if there is a change in diet it should be made gradually, as in mixing in some of the new pellets with the old brand etc etc until the total change is made over.

bunnies have an ecosystem of bacteria in their guts that digest their food. The various kind of bacteria live in a balance to the sort of food the rabbit is eating, if a big change is made, they don’t have the particular balance of bacteria in their gut to handle it yet and it can lead to trouble, but if the change is made gradually the bacterial flora change balance along with it and all is well.

baby bunnies eat their mom’s poops to get the right bacteria in their gut for the foods they will be eating.

It’s not a good idea to change the diet drastically, all pellets are not equal and vary tremendously in make up. Please find out what brand your bunny has been eating and get THAT one. then, when the other pellets come, make the change over gradually
