Hi! So sorry but this is stupidly long, I just want to make sure I’m not making mistakes with this wee one.

So we have taken in an unwanted bunny, she is 6 weeks old and I know this is waaay to young to be weaned from her mum but there’s nothing we can do about that apart from make sure to care for her now. We think we will call her Maisy! She’s sweet and calm but this is probably just the cute baby stage!

We know to not let Pippin (6ish month old neutered male) near her until she is spayed. However due to space in our small flat and wanting to keep her somewhere she wouldn’t be isolated, we are currently keeping her in the top floor of Pip’s two story indoor hutch (Pip has the downstairs, an xpen and cage attached together, it’s a bit makeshift out of things we got when not so well informed, but is a decent amount of space for him and he is free roam 12 hours a day anyway). She is very small because of her age so this still gives her room to binky (wee baby binkies!).

Next week our grid cubes are finally arriving, been hard to get hold of them for an ok price, here in the Netherlands we could only find them in one place for double the price of in America so we ordered from the UK! When they arrive my fiance is building two cages using 90 grids between them to make space for both bunnies in the hope when she is spayed they can be made into one big cage. (I’m aware of baby bunnies and the dangers of the grids so we will be covering them till she grows).

So I just have a few questions/things to check about caring for a bunny so young!

        • I am making sure she poops and pees often, I see her drinking a lot and she is eating. Is there anything else to keep an eye on with a young bunny?
        • We are feeding her Selective junior pellets, which seems to be the best option available in the Netherlands.
        • I can’t find Timothy hay or alfalfa anywhere but I have alfalfa cubes, is this okay to feed her?
        • She has unlimited hay, it is not any particular type but it is horse quality and she seems to like eating it so I hope that is ok.
        • She has a litter tray which is big enough for her and loads of hay but she poops and pees everywhere anyway, I assume this is because she’s still a baby and she will get better about choosing one place as she grows? Pip was 12 weeks when we got him and he has always been very good with only using his box (a bit too good where at one point he wouldnt go when we moved his home! all good now). I put her poops in the box and any tissues with her pee but I don’t expect her to learn yet, just wondering what age she can be litter trained at?
        • I put a blanket down in the hallway and let her explore for a wee bit today with Pip in his pen in the living room, she did some shivers and derpy binkies and also a little pee but she seemed to enjoy it. How much run time should she get at that age? Pip is free roam all day so I have to be careful to keep him away from the hall when she is there but I want to make sure she gets enough exercise as she grows. Next week she will have a big cage for herself so will have more room and hopefully if all goes well with spaying/bonding she will be free roam with Pip!
        • I am scared about getting the balance between handling her and letting her free enough, and leaving her to settle on her own. As she is so young she is easy to pick up and hold when I have to move her for playtime, I don’t like doing that to rabbits though because she is probably just letting me pick her up out of fear. Should I be socialising her with me to get used to touch?
        • And lastly, about Pip! He is very curious about her. He growled and thumped a bit once he realised there was a bunny above him and tried every means to climb up there using nearby furniture to try and get a good vantage point! I was getting scared that he was getting stressed so we put them in a carrier each and took them outside so it was new, and placed the carriers facing each other so they could see and sniff through the bars. This went well and there was lots of sniffing and some ignoring and afterwards Pip was so calm and no longer obsessed with every noise or movement or smell he sensed from her. It was like now he knew she wasn’t a threat it was ok. I gave him lots of attention and pets and small treats when he was being calm to let him know mummy and daddy haven’t replaced him! I let him see her toy bunny she snuggles with and he was all wide eyed like when he gets excited, and he honked and chinned and licked it a lot. When the toy had previously been on my bed and smelling of me he would actually pick it up and chuck it off the bed, so he likes her more than me lol!
        • I know this isn’t advised to let them meet before spaying but it really seems to have worked to just let them see each other. Will it be okay to house them in grid cube cages next to each other (with enough space so they cant bite through bars) as she grows? That is our plan and I hope it won’t ruin the future attempts at bonding. I know when she gets hormonal Pip may not accept her anymore or the other way around. Separate rooms are not an option sadly until we move house.

So sorry for the length, here are some pictures of wee Maisy! Do you know what mix of breeds she could be? She has blue eyes and pink lop ears and supersuper fluff!

          Oh. My. Goodness.

One thing I know for sure…I’m coming to “bun-nap” her!!! Lol! She is adorable!

She’s obviously a lop… Maybe a fuzzy lop? Or could be mixed with lionhead, but with more lop characteristics?

That was my reaction when I first saw her lol! I couldn’t turn her down, she’s just ridiculously cute!

Just googled fuzzy lops and that could be it! I’ll have another look. But her ears seem much larger than the pictures I saw, maybe she’ll grow into them haha.

              Could she be a lionlop?

ooooh googled that too and there are some very similar looking ones! I can’t tell if her head is fluffier than her body yet, she’s mostly just a giant ball of wool haha. Thank you for those suggestions, some sort of fuzzylionlop she must be!

Oh my gosh!!!!! She is so stinking cute!!!! Yep. Next time we have a bunny stealing thread I’m stealing Maisy and keeping her in a very secure location so no one is gonna steal her! But yes her facial features look more like a lionhead to me.
She will be much easier to litter train after her spay is done. Since she is so young she needs alfafa hay I believe, and her diet should consist mostly of hay and pellets. Usually you can introduce greens around 12 weeks. I don’t know too much about the cubes but I would guess that they are fine.

She’s super adorable! Looks like a living cotton ball haha

As far as care goes, you’re doing everything right for the most part. I think it’s never too early to start litter training buns. I got mine when he was 6 wk old and he came trained already.

Thanks! “Stinking cute” is exactly how my fiance describes her haha
I am definitely not giving her any greens yet, just hay and junior pellets and alfalfa cubes. I don’t know what it is about the Netherlands, rabbits are so popular here yet nowhere sells the things I need for them, it’s all quite old fashioned rabbit care and I’m having to order from the UK. So I will try and track some alfalfa hay down. For now she is greedily eating all her hay and cubes and pellets which is good.
How ‘unlimited’ is unlimited pellets for a bunny her age? It took her a while to eat them at first but now she demolishes them straight away so I don’t know how much she should get?
And I think, I *think* she is already getting better with her litter box. I kept putting her poops in it and this afternoon there have only been 2 stray ones and no pee anywhere else. Fingers crossed she’s getting there!
But she’s just so darn cute she can pee anywhere and I’m just like “awwwwww shucks!”

Haha rigt?! You just can’t stay mad at that cute little face
I’m not for sure the amount of pellets she should have, but not necessarily unlimited. As an afult she should only have an 1/8 of a cup.

Wow! She is too cute!!!! I just want to eskimo kiss her!
I’m no expert, but the hay cubes I have are simply compressed hay (read the bag for other ingredients). The hay cubes are really good for the teeth as they are harder to chew. Keep giving the regular hay as well as she’ll need different textures of hay to help with her digestion and teeth.

As for breed, may part angora?

Please keep your location a secret, as I am visiting The Hague this summer and I WILL steal her!! lol!!! Just kidding. kinda.

Eee!!! Maisy is soooo adorable!!! No wonder you took her in! I would have too! <3<3<3 And she is definitely loppish alright lol. I think it'll be easier to tell once she grows a bit more. My bunnies grew a TON in the following few months after I got them. It was insane! Luckily I am an obsessive bunny mama and have it all in picture lol. I'd love you to show us more pics as she grows!

I’ve been watching her when she’s grooming and when she tilts her head I can definitely see that the hair between her ears is longer than on her body, and she also has a bit of a Gandalf facial hair situation when she yawns lol. So I think she is a lionlop, thanks for that suggestion!

Also her litter habits have got remarkably better, 90% of the time everything goes in the box. During playtime she sometimes forgets to get in the box and just goes where she is running, or steals some hay over the side of the box and poops on the floor beside it -_- but we’re working on getting that bum in there 100%!

First of all, your bun is ADORABLE!!! Now for the questions:

                                          1. When I got Cookies he was 3 months. When I first came home I but him in his little hutch (he is free range for 8 hours) and watched him run around and binky. Wow, did he do big binkies! Anyways, supervised him and made sure he didn’t bite the bars of his cage. I also made sure he ate and wasn’t looking lazy. That’s all I would look for in a baby bunny.

                                          2. The food looks fine. The only things that standout to me is soybean, wheat, and milk thistle seeds. Maybe it’s because I either don’t know what milk thistle seeds are and I am probably thinking of dog food.

                                          3. I would break apart the alfalfa cubes. I would think that it will be a little too hard.

                                          4. I searched it and it said that they can eat it as long as it isn’t wet. Correct me if I am wrong, please.

                                          5. Cookies was very good with the litter box. But, the first couple days he did poop and pee everywhere.

                                          6. With Pip around, I would think that 1-2 hours of SUPERVISED play time without him would be good, aleast until she is spayed and is bonded with Pip.

                                          7. I would keeppetting here until she starts to lick. Whenever I open Cookies door he runs out and starts licking me. I don’t know why but he does it. I think they do that when they like you. Cookies doesn’t let me pick him up. He just runs away.

                                          8. I guess it’s okay to let them see eachother. But no physical contact!

                                          9. You can cage them like that. Just make sure they can’t jump over!

I think she is an American Fuzzy Lop mixed with a Lionhead.
