I want to buy a possibly tree-like house plant. But I want one I can just take leaves off to feed to my bunny (don’t have one yet but I will). I am also planning on building my own condo and there is wire mesh and hex wire I was wondering if it would be ok to use hex wire. I didn’t know if the bun could chew through it and I didn’t know if the holes were too big (Like big enough for it’s head to get stuck).

The only plant I know for sure is OK to feed fresh is apple trees-I’m sure there are others but plenty of them must be properly dried first so it’s risky to do that yourself.
I’m not sure if you could grow an apple tree indoors-maybe if you have plenty of sunlight. For sure people grow all kinds of bonzai indoors so an apple wouldn’t be that different?

You could certainly grow organic roses -they love the flowers. You could do a window box with herbs(Basil, mint) and flowers-nasturium and marigolds are some my guys like.

I’m also thinking that you’d be better off with small pots of herbs if you wanted to grow something indoors. Obviously, it wouldn’t be enough (in quantity OR variety) to be the bunny’s entire fresh veggie diet, but it would be fun to supplement with that.

Not sure what this hex wire is… Do you mean chicken wire? The thin chicken wire is not safe unfortunately. Buns can easily chew their ways out of that.

At your local hardware store they should have “rabbit wire”. This wire is thicker, the spacing is a bit smaller, and the openings are small rectangles. This is the stuff you want if you are doing the condo DIY.

Also, it may be easier to make a condo out of NIC cubes if you want to make a diy cage.

“Rabbit wire” is welded, hex (chicken) wire is like a knitting – if the bunny chews off one single thread, the whole net can come apart – and bunny can escape. Check out the Would you like a coke with that? -thread (in the Lounge) if you want to see what bunny-teeth can do to metal =)

I grow basil indoors for my bunnies because it’s a plant that likes indoors-climate and is much appreciated by bunnies.

chickenwire would cut the hell out of a bunny’s mouth if they chewed on it

I would not use hex wire or mesh wire – as previously stated those would cause damage to your rabbit’s mouth – I suggest using the NIC cubes to make your condo.

I have no idea about tree like plants but I think most herbs can be grown indoors and those are good for rabbits like bam’s suggestion of basil.

Great info, Bam! I didn’t know how they are constructed differently! Learn something new every day!

Well hex wire is chicken wire but there is also rectangle chicken wire but there is something called hardware mesh or hardware cloth. So if hex isn’t ok could I use the mesh? It’s welded and the holes can be very small and the wire could be quite thick also. And thank you for all the help on the wire and plants I will be sure to plant some herbs

I think the mesh is fine.
