I have an angora/teddy mix, and the vet recommended that we trim her hair to keep her from matting (her hair was in BAD condition when we adopted her).

She sat through her trim at home very well, we just used short scissors, and now she is matt free!

Except – I noticed the other day while petting her, that in her little bunny tail, there is a hard stump of cartilage that I hadn’t noticed before. I feel like we might have snipped the tip of her tail – it makes me want to cry! – but she is acting fine, eating, drinking, playing, and the stump never bled and doesn’t look infected.

I’m not sure if I need to take her to the vet if it doesn’t look infected (I’m in France and it costs 39€ just for a visit)… but could this little snip have long term effects?

        I feel horrible!!!

If there’s no wound and no infection, there’s not a lot a vet could do. Is there any signs of tenderness?

Of course you feel horrible, but it was an accident.

I think you should keep an eye on her and check the tail daily for a while to see that it stays ok. Dogs and cats and pet rats sometimes loose a bit or most of their tails in accidents and they do just fine.

It’s odd though that you didn’t notice any bleeding when you happened to cut it. If you actually did cut it.

            Thanks for your response, bam.

Honestly, I’m not even sure if I even cut it – I may have just trimmed the hair so close to it that I can now see the cartilage. There was never a sign of bleeding that I noticed, it is a normal color, and I’ve been checking it every day and she seems okay. (Reacts just as if I were to try to pet her on her stomach or somewhere else that she doesn’t like.)

I just wanted to make sure that if I did, that it wouldn’t impact her bunny bones in some way, if that even makes sense! It’s hard not to over-worry about this little fur ball sometimes!

She sounds OK. If you want, you can lift up her eyelid to see is shes in pain. If the white of her eye is red (not the normal pink/red veins, but like an angry red) she may be in a little pain. But she sounds like shes doing OK

It rather does sound like you just cut very close to the tip.

                Bunny-owners frequently over-worry. That’s more or less a law of nature =)
