So i have been using Gem Shavings for about a couple months (Note this is not for advertising purposes) http://www.gemshavings.com/whites.htm They say there are no phenols but is the type of tree safe?? Frappuccino (my bunny) has not had a problem with them but i was just worried…

They are a softwood, which is generally not safe. But they are kiln dried. On the other hand, I have never heard of using fir or hemlock for bedding. I would switch to aspen, wsp, or carefresh if you have access to it.

Are you using the shavings for the entire cage base?

Does Frappuccino used a litter box?

Edit: I just saw picture of his cage set up in your other thread so that answers my questions!
Does he use his box well? You can actually do away with the shavings altogether.
House bunnies don’t need bedding. Lots of people have trouble litter training too when they use full cage bedding along with litterbox. The rabbits tend to toilet on both.

He doesn’t need anything on the cage bottom, the plastic/linoleum/wood/whatever is fine. However, if he has sensitive hocks or won’t walk on slippery floors, you can use carpet or fleece, as long as he doesn’t chew them.

                    Ditto ^

Lots of people also like those memory foam mats to line the cage.

If me, I’d trial how things go with just the bare cage floor then add something if he’s having trouble adjusting.
