So if you saw on my other post I got a new baby bunny we are pretty sure he isn’t anywhere near the nine weeks that they said he was.  So I was wondering what the best food is to feed him? He is very skinny and I’d say he is underweight. So far he has been eating lots of hay but doesn’t really understand the concept of pellets so doesn’t eat them. Any suggestions on other hay/food I can give him?

        Thanks!

I wonder if it would be worth mixing some milk replacement formula and seeing if he would lap it ?

Alfalfa hay and alfalfa based pellets are best for young rabbits. Oxbow makes a alfalfa based pellet specifically for young rabbits. http://www.amazon.com/Oxbow-Essentials-Bunny-Basics-Alfalfa/dp/B001CQEKF2

Roberta- What sort of milk replcement formula? Is there a special one of bunnies? He always seems to be hungry but when he takes a pellet he just spits it back out.
Eepster- I have tried to get the young oxbow pellets but have’t had any luck in Western Australia but i’ll keep looking.

              Thanks guys

Wombaroo and Divetilac make formula for rabbits

I believe the Wombaroo is the better product and possibly more readily available (Vetwest, My Pet Warehouse etc), I had to buy in the D-Vetelact in a mtter of urgency before and I found it at Pet City.

Ok we are back from the vet!! It went well! little bunny was so calm! Peach and Shamus were freaking out like they always do when we go in the car or to the vets but tiny bunny was so chilled!
The vet checked his front teeth and molars and he is all good there. When weighed he was only 280 grams! sheesh! the vet agreed with us and doesn’t beleive he is 9 weeks maybe only 4-5 weeks. He is a bit skinny but other than that he is all healthy! The vet is pretty sure he is a he but we will double check again when he is a bit bigger

I would just give him unlimited pellets and hay – that will help “fatten” him up. He doesn’t need any milk if he is eating on his own.

Did you see if he had greenish coloured pellets at the store?
You could give Peters Lucerne pellets & see if that’s what he’s been used to.

That’s wonderful news Floppybuns! (still can’t believe you can’t get Oxbow ‘young’ rabbit food in WA? There must be a reason (especially seeing I can get it in QLD), but got me buggered what that reason could be?). Anyhow, he is eating what you have, so that’s great!!!!!! Wishing your new guy the best of health, cheers.
