        Hey everyone, flash was supposed to get spayed this morning but web the vet ran pre anesthetic blood test they found her liver enzyme was high. She said tim could be of young age since she is only 7 months old. Has this happened to anyone before? What are rabbit liver problems?

          I don’t know much about liver enzymes but I didn’t notice you have her on wood shavings in your avatar picture. Do you still use this bedding? What type if wood is it?

          Wood shavings can affect liver enzymes. I had thought this over occurred over a long length of time but it doesnt mention time factor in this article (below).
          So maybe the shavings are the culprit?

            Mine had that during his pre neuter blood work. It wasn’t scary high, they said not to worry about it. We haven’t. He’s fine.

            I don’t know what it’s about, but I thought I’d offer that much.

              I bought her a new cage yesterday which is much larger and she does not have bedding anymore. Thanks both of you for the informative advice

                Just out of interest, how long ago did you stop using bedding? It would be interesting if its only recent and then her liver levels test as normal at a later date.

                Did you opt for the bloodwork or is that just part of the vets standard procedure?

                  When I went in to check her in, they asked if I would like to do the blood work. I was on the rocks if I wanted to because to me she looks healthy and seems fine. I’m happy I said yes! Its been approximately 2.5 weeks since I have had bedding in her cage. The kind I used is Katyee brand Clean & Cozy for small pets. She has a new appointment in 4 weeks to see if everything is back to normal and if she she will run further tests.

                    This has been some of my past experiences with this:

                    1. I had a pair of rabbits that kept having high liver enzymes come back with blood tests and the vet finally deemed that they were okay and did the neuters;

                    2. One of my vets kept having low liver enzymes and other odd stuff not only on my rabbits but other client’s rabbits and she called the lab and they did not have the machines calibrated correctly for rabbits – they just didn’t do that – it may have been calibrated for cats and dogs on a regular basis but not other species.

                      Thank you Sarita! I actually just found my old thread and copied what you’d written about this. The lab issue.

                      Ashleyann, I see that bedding is paper based so that shouldn’t have caused a problem.

                          This just happened to my Lola this morning! They called and said they wouldn’t feel comfortable doing the spay because her liver levels were really high. I have been a nervous wreck ever since she called! They said they were going to put her on an antibiotic for 10 days and to come back in 4 weeks for another blood test.
