        Hi,

I’m a first time rabbit owner, my bun is about 1.5 years old, I’ve had him about 3 months.

I noticed a day or two ago that his right eye was protruding more than the left—I can see the white around it, like he is over excited or scared—while the left eye looks completely normal. He is behaving normally, eating, pooping, and drinking in the usual amount, and there isn’t a ring of redness around the affected eye. He also isn’t head tilting or having trouble moving/low energy.

Has anyone else had this problem? I haven’t rushed him to the vet because he doesn’t seem to be unhealthy or in pain, but I’m going to get this taken care of and I’d like to get an idea of how much $$ to set aside for special treatment.

        Thanks!

It’s very difficult to know exactly what this could be from to tell you the truth – if there is a problem with the eye it could be from a number of different causes which is why having a vet do a hand’s on-exam is so important. So really it would be difficult to know what the possible cost of treatment is and costs vary so greatly from place to place – obviously your vet can give you a cost estimate based on treatment for any possible diagnosis.

If it is just swelling and eye drops can be used, then it shouldn’t be terribly expensive. But like Sarita said, it’s difficult for us to really know what it is. There are a lot of things that could be the cause and some things would definitely cost more to treat than others. Having an exam by a vet will be the first step, which can range in price depending on your location and the vet. Mine charges $40 for a visit for something “new”. I’ve heard other people saying $80-$90 for an exam fee.
