        Hello all,

About 2 weeks ago my family welcomed an adult black mini lop into our family. She was found by a friend along side a road. We named her Pepper. A week ago I discovered she is expecting when I noticed her sides moving. Since then we have set her up with a nest box, a 4x2x3 C&C cage, litter box and toys.

She is a fantastic rabbit. She likes her head scratched, isn’t afraid of the kids or the dog, and so far seems nondestructive. The only problem I have been having with her is she likes to pee on the couch and my son’s bed. She doesn’t really use her box in her cage but she also isn’t peeing on the carpet. Just the couch and my son’s bed. I think she knows that she isn’t allowed to do that because she will wait until I get up off the couch to go and pee on it quickly before jumping off and running away. It’s driving me a bit nuts as I would like to give her as much out-of-cage time as I can. Since I stay home all day realistically it should be all day! Right now she is not spayed since she is expecting. Once her babies are born and weaned she will be spayed. I have already spoken to our vet about it. I know that will help with the litter box habits but is there anything I can do in the mean time?

         Thanks!

Welcome, and congrats on the new bunny!
Until she is spayed, I don’t know if there is much you can do. Since she is pregnant, she doesn’t really need that much exercise, at least I don’t think so. When is she due?
Good luck, I hope someone with more experience posts.

I’m not sure when she is due. She was already pregnant when she was found. I can’t imagine it would be much longer since she has already built her nest and I can see the babies moving inside of her.

She may not need that much exercise but she does like her out of cage time. She binkies and does zoomies all throughout our house. I just wish I could get her to stop peeing on the couch! So hard to clean the couch too. =/

How wonderful! So nice of you and your family to give her (and her coming kits) a warm home.
The only thing I can think of is try to keep her off those areas. Maybe when she is out keep her somewhat confined to maybe just one room or block off the bedrooms. Good luck with everything! Hope to see pictures of your lovely girl and her babies when they arrive

Baby bunnies are so cute! Are you planning on keeping them all? Or do you have any questions about how to take care of them? Go to the house rabbit society’s website. I belive they have some info on baby bunnies there

I use to volunteer and foster for a rabbit rescue so I’m prepared for the babies. It has been about 10 years since I have had a pregnant rabbit but I remember how it goes.

I talked my husband into letting us keep one baby bunny when the time comes but the rest of the kits we will have to find homes for. I can’t wait to see the babies though. They are going to be so darn cute!

I’d love to upload pictures but I’m not sure how to do that yet since I just joined the forum.

OK, if this picture uploading worked this should be Miss Pepper.

I’d just like to say she’s cute! But unfortunately pics of baby bunnies is not allowed here unless it’s for something medical seeking advice. I know this wasn’t on purpose.

Pepper has not had her babies yet. I did not intentionally breed her. When she was found on the side of the road, 2 weeks ago, she was already pregnant. It is a heartless individual that would let a pregnant pet rabbit go along side the road. She is doing well right though. We love having her in our family already and can’t wait to welcome her litter.

I know it’s not on purpose. But the rules pertain to all baby bunnies I was just letting you know JUST IN CASE you were planning on posting baby pics when they arrived or something. I should’ve worded it differently in my previous comment lol

You can post pictures of the babies if you intend to keep them, or if you are posting them to seek advice I believe.
Good luck with it all, good for you for rescuing her!

I don’t know how many she is going to have. If she only has two I think I could talk my hubby into just one more but if she has a litter of 6, that might be a bit too many rabbits for us. We already have 5 guinea pigs, 2 gerbils, and a sheltie dog.

Welcome! Well done for rescuing her, she is beautiful! You are already a brilliant bunny mamma for providing everything she needs to have her babies, I will keep my fingers crossed for you for a safe delivery and healthy bubs Shame that the rules apply to baby bunnies even though they were conceived before you rescued her … I wanna see rescue bunny kits!
                                        xx

Does anyone have any books to recommend on training house rabbits and their behavior? I had rabbits in college and high school and I was so in tuned to them and their language but now it seems with Pepper I can’t really remember much. It’s been 6 years since my last rabbit passed away and it seems I have forgotten how to speak rabbit.

I would recommend The House Rabbit Handbook.
If you can’t get that, Good Rabbitkeeping is OK.

Gosh I wonder how long she’d been out roaming around? The brown in her coat looks like sun bleached fur. Or perhaps she was kept outdoors.

Thank you for taking her in!

I hope you’re able to resolve the issue with the couch. Could you lay a shower curtain or something over it during the time she’s running about?

Welcome to BB! Just catching up on some threads!

So it’s been over a week… No babies ever came? Sounds like she was probably experiencing a false pregnancy. This is common in unspayed females. Fortunately, this would mean that you can get her spayed sooner rather than later. 🙂
