I just can’t believe to get Moccasin Spayed its $410 dollars. I’m in Los Angeles and I’ve been comparing prices all day

and $410 is average. Is everyone else’s THAT expensive?

How far can you drive? I would look a bit farther away. Just might be worth it.

Just as a suggesyion, a spay-neuter clinic for rabbits might be cheaper. Just make sure they do rabbits a lot. She probably won’t get the attention of the vet, and I don’t know about pain meds. Has anyone had experience with these clinics?

I had to drive 90 miles to get my buns spayed and neutered because I was getting quoted $459 for spay and the neuter was actually a couple dollars more! Just a warning. Vets sometimes up the price to deter you from choosing them because they don’t have THAT much experience spaying a rabbit. Of there is a house rabbit society around you call them and ask if they have any recommendations on low cost spay and neuters for rabbits. They will be glad to help you! I ended up paying $65 for my neuter and $100 for the spay. The hour and half drive there and hour and half drive back was worth it.

That is pricy, but unfortunately it’s not out of the range of normal. I’ve seen prices quoted at $5-600, but that high is pretty rare.

Prices will depend on region. LA (and other major cities) are expensive areas, so the vet’s office lease and overhead is high. They need to reflect that in their costs.

MK recommended checking out low-cost spay/neuter clinics and LEL recommended exploring options outside of the area. Both are fantastic options. Some rescues work with low-cost clinics, they may be able to give you info. And expanding the search to surrounding areas may bring up vets that are experienced but don’t have the high “city” overhead. It’s not unreasonable for people to travel an hour or two away and be able to pay half the price. You could still keep your local vet for regular care and emergencies, but for a one time spay surgery, it might be worth checking out.

Next week it’s $350 for Licorice’s neuter. And that is a cheaper price because the Vet did his pre-neuter check for free since he made an error telling us he was neutered when he wasn’t.  I was a little surprised at that one – it’s not even invasive. I’m in the Buffalo, NY area though and wondered if it was just par for the course here. Everything in NY is expensive!

I am very fortunate in that I get rescue rates… It costs me $95 for a girl spayed and vaxed and $65 for a boy neutered and vaxed… Usually the average is about $250 for boys and $275 for girls without vaccination… My vet only charges me for the drugs, equipment and consumables.

That is very expensive! I only had to pay 200 for the spay and take home medication. I hope that Moccasin can get a cheaper spay!

OMG Kats! I’m outside of Rochester and it is $108. Of course an exam would be almost $50 more w/o blood work. Sounds like a rip off. Right in Rochester is very pricey but if you’re talking about a male with both testicles descended that’s ridiculous!

Two Columbus, OH area clinics quoted me over $350 for a spay. These are experienced, recommended vets.

I’m looking for other options in southern OH, but not getting a lot of recommendations for vets with lots of bunny experience.

Nessie’s spay was around $350. I looked up spay/neuter places near me and the savings would be outweighed by the gas/tolls/time it would have taken to get there.

I live in orlando fl and i called around to many vets in our area, I am surprised that a few of them didn’t do rabbit spays. I even have a vet tell me he hadn’t done one but would be willing to do ours…umm no thanks, the average price was over 300 dollars, My girlfriend had just adopted a dog with for her family and told me about her vet…they are familiar with bunny spay and the whole thing is going to cost me $150…so i am going to use them..they even said they use the same anastheia that they use on nicu babies…i would call around. it was worth the phone calls i had to make

Rodan’s neuter was 252, which was the least expensive in the area (supposed to have a 50$ initial exam fee, but they have an agreement with the local spca because I adopted him there) the SPCA now spays/neuters rabbits, exactly *right* after I got mine!! (I volunteer there now, signed up to do it when I got Rodan…I’m a little bitter about paying the 252! lol)
I’d assume a female would be more, it’s a more in depth surgery.

                                         Wow!  That’s insane!

in Hawaii I paid $56.  Here in Minnesota I’ll pay $156.  I honestly think they charge more, because they really don’t want to do them.

They consider it handling an “exotic” where if you were bringing in your rabbit for anything else… They are considered a “farm animal” or “livestock”.

That is super high! I WOULD have paid 250 for Ginger to be spayed, but the rescue I got her from advertised her as spayed and she wasn’t, so they paid.

OUCH, a full call out for me is only 250.00, That’s coggins for 2 horses, vaccines for 2 wolfdogs, health checks for 13 rabbits, 42 chickens, 1 hog, 1 conure and, the wolfdogs and horses. (60.00 of that is the call out plus treat one animal fee.)

I’ve seen prices that high. I paid @ $225 for Kieko (we had her done as an emergency — turned into attack bunny when she got a glimpse of the M&M’s when we first brought them home so vet got her in the next morning for us). Marlee and Moshi were $180 and $150 plus meds — they were done on the same day so the vet gave me a “volume” discount! Where the vet is will definitely affect price.

Glad to know what everyone else is paying. I think its a good reference!
Heca, I kind of agree… some vets don’t want to do it. I heard some vets when I was calling say.. “its just so much harder then a dog” In my head I was like, “Then you are NOT my vet”. I’m going to keep looking. I just remember that I have a friend who works for animal control and might be able to get me a deal! I’m going to keep looking. Thanks for the link.

Yes, rabbit spays ARE harder as the uterus is extremely friable… Breaks easily and, well, you can imagine the complications of that. Many many vets simply won’t do it, including the one I usually see cuz she was honest and said she would have nightmares for days ahead of it.

I’ve done some research lately. I live near Flagstaff AZ, and I had quotes from 150 to 410 for a spay, NONE of those included bloodwork etc.

                                                                WOW!

About 20 yrs ago, we lived in a more rural area and a country vet spayed a rat for 15 and two rabbits for 30 each, and not a bit of trouble for either of them.

Last year in SC I paid 250 dollars for a neuter on a rabbit, with blood work, etc.

I called the spay/neuter clinic in our area and they only handle dogs and cats.
