I have a new, not yet spayed female rabbit (Marilyn Bunroe) that I’m trying to bond with my New Zealand neutered boy (Mr. Bunny). Mr. Bunny likes to put his head down and Ms. Bunroe will go straight for his eye, licking hard then nipping. A few times she has made his eyelid bleed. She also gets so excited and cant help but hump him but she always bites when humping. Luckily Mr. Bunny is laid back and just tries to move away but he has defended himself with a bite back. I am always there to separate them before this happens but she always seems to have uncontrollable urges to hump/bite and violently lick his poor eyes. I have a feeling this would escalate into to a bad fight if I didnt intervene.

Mr. Bunny seems like the dominant one and always puts his head down first but he will groom her when he feels like it. Is the eyeball chomping a sign of dominance or does she just like the salty taste? Is the violent humping just hormones or is she trying to put him in his place? Will this behavior stop when I get her spayed?

Also, when they are separated by fence, Mr. Bunny likes to lay down right next to her as close as he can get. They seem comfortable with each other and accept the fact they live together. I made tons of videos but they wont upload unfortunately so here’s random pics:

I strongly suggest you wait until your girl is spayed until you start bonding. Unspayed females are just too hormonal for bonding to be safe.

Some humping is probably hormonal but humping is a dominance behavior as well and is normal during bonding.

          Your bunnies are cute!

I know I need to get her fixed ASAP. Is the eye obsession normal? Do other bunnies go straight for the eye?
