Hey everyone. Today BunBun got her head stuck in the 1 1/2 inch cage wires of her NIC cage. She started vigilantly pulling her head and shaking the cage and after about 30 seconds she freed herself. I was screamed and typing this I’m still traumatized and almost sure she is to. She appears fine with no visible injuries. I did the treat test to be sure she’d eat, and have seen her use the litter box. I haven’t seen her drink water yet but am watching her. This event accrued about 1 he ago as I was about to leave the house when it happened. The only think I’ve noticed “wrong” with her is her stomach Is making noise almost like a humans does when it’s digesting food or hungry. What should I do? We’ve had her for two weeks and she’s only 9-11 weeks old and growing fast.

Edit: When I got home she was laying in her igloo. Currently she just are some hay and did a flop and is laying there. She has been running around but no binkies.

She’s probably stressed, I know I would be if I were her. As long as there is no signs of pain and she’s eating / pooping OK she should be fine. But, you want to put a mesh over the bars or something so she can’t get her head through them again. She could potentially break her neck doing that. It’s best to use the SMALLEST NIC cubes available, the larger holes as you can see, are too large and they can get stuck in them.

She sounds like she’s doing okay…I know how worried you must be though! Try to stay calm and continue to moniter her. As far as the noises you are hearing I’m not too sure, but some bunnies make more noise than others.

How awful!!!! That IS the smallest Nic cube size isn’t it? So glad she got out!

NIC cubes come in 1″ spacing. But, for small babies that even that size is a bit big for, you can buy hardware cloth for about $12-$15 and mesh the outside to prevent them squeezing through.

Stickerbunny, I have never seen NIC grids with a 1-inch spacing. I’ve only seen the standard 1.5 inch and (too big) 3-inch size. Where are 1-inch grids available? Do you know what brand name they are? This could be good info to add to our NIC condo “Where to Buy” resource page!

I can’t believe she was able to get her head into the 1.5 inch space. She must be impossibly tiny. I’ve only heard of this being an issue with very, very young bunnies (like less than 4 weeks old or so).

Like recommended, you should cover the grids with something to prevent this from happening again.
