        Hello Fellow Bunny Lovers!

Yesterday I let Walter outside in his big wire pen to run as it was beautiful outside. I noticed his back feet looked a little red so I lifted him up and he had sore hocks! For those of you that don’t know what sore hocks are it is when your bun’s usually hind feet are rubbed free of fur and have sores on them. I knew right away that they were sore hocks because I had researched them for a poster. We looked on the internet for a solution. For now we moved him into a different cage that isn’t wire. Then we put Neosporin on the sores and wrapped them up with some of the horse bandages that I had. Does anyone have any suggestions for how to treat this? I would appreciate any comments very much! Thank You!

Definitely keep him off wire and keep his area very clean. Are there open wounds or just red-infammed looking scabs? If they are open and/or bleeding, he will have to see the vet. My vet always prescribes antibiotics to prevent infection. Once infection sets in, it’s very hard to get rid of. Your vet could also give you something to wash his feet with. My vet gave me chlorehexidine scrub for Olivia’s sore hocks.

They were just scabby. They weren’t bleeding I don’t think. On Tuesday we are taking my dog in to the vet get her shots. We will probably ask what we should do.

We asked the small animal vet what we should do and she said just to pretty much keep doing what we were doing. We don’t have them wrapped up anymore but we still have him off the wire. I will probably wrap them up for a while after I put him back in his part wire cage just to make sure that the sores are fully healed.

Please don’t put him back in the wire bottomed cage even after he has healed. Wire is very painful on bunny feet, and can cause problems with the feet, bumblefoot/sore hocks, (as you have seen) and broken nails and toes.

My grandpa who built the hutch brought some plastic car liners (unused) to put over the wire. Now Walter is in his big cage again enjoying the beautiful weather! Thanks for the comments!

Yay! Glad his hocks are better! Do be careful he doesn’t chew on the plastic.

He is leaving the plastic alone! Thanks for all the support!
