Flash is 7 months and will be spayed in 10 days, today I found in her cage she urinated in her betting as. Their was a few red dots in the bedding/urine. Called the vet it said she could be starting to be in heat? Has this happened to anyone before? She is still pooping lots but not using her littler box, also any tricks to get her to eat more hay? I’m a new rabbit owner and very concerned for my little girl!

Is the whole pee spot red, or is it small dots in the pee? Does it dry red or brown? Rabbit pee is often red, but you do want to make sure it’s not blood.
As for the hay, what is her diet like now, and her weight? You may want to decrease her pellets to increase her hay intake.

Rabbits don’t go into “heat”, so it wouldn’t be that. LEL is right about pee being reddish sometimes. It’s caused by pigments in the food they eat.

If it is red or rusty looking spots in otherwise different colored urine, that is probably blood and, indicates a problem. The fact that your vet did not know that rabbits do not go into heat does not speak well of that vet for rabbits.

I have been having this same problem since nov, as the above repliers know lol :p If you want you can read my posts there were a lot of good answers on there:

Like the others mentioned, if there are red spots in the pee then it is blood but if it is uniformly red theres nothing to worry about. You might want to have it checked just incase, b/c I read this other post once where the pee was all red in colour but it ended up being blood D:

Yes I’m a bit miffed that they suggested your bun was in heat, not so much at the vet but at the receptionist who, I’m guessing, was just thinking she could handle that one herself. I hate it when receptionists do that. Don’t mess around if it really seems to be blood. Best of luck

I’m with the others, if your vet thinks your bunny is in heat then it does not seem that he has much knowledge of rabbits.

It was definitely small dots. Not in all the urine but on the bedding.

You definitely need another vet. If you’re a vet, to say that a rabbit has blood in the urine because she’s getting into heat is roughly equivalent to saying a dog is probably growing antlers if it has an itch on the forehead.

Blood in the urine can depend on lots of things, it may be from the reproductive organs or from a urinary problem like UTI. You should get it checked out – as everybody else has already said.

Best of luck,I hope it’s nothing really bad. Please keep us posted.

Is it bright red spirs youre seeing? Have you checked her nails in case she’s torn one?

I would consider taking her in for urine test if you can’t find another source for the blood. Also as opportunity to ask more questions about vets experience with surgery on rabbits if you’re having doubts.

I agree with the others too… A proper vet check as rabbits do not go on heat but in the interim check her coat for flea dirt. I tiny spot of flea poo can make quite a large spot of blood when it gets wet.

Is it possible a cat has slept on the bedding in the laundry basket whilst it was waiting to be folded or sorted ?

Another good way to check your bun is to sit her on some white paper or sheet or pillow case… Brush her fur thoroughly or run your hands through it vigorously. Lift her off and spray the paper or fabric with water… The flea poo will start to leach red.
