Easter approaches, and unfortunately we all know what that means – adorable little baby bunnies spawned by backyard and/or mill/commercial breeders (since every reputable breeder I know flat-out doesn’t sell bunns as pets this time of year) and misguided parents who think it’s okay to put one or more live bunnies in a child’s Easter basket.  Most of May is full of uber-cute photo ops with said child and their live Easter bunn(s)… but then June rolls around, hormones start kicking in and far too many parents set a stellar example for their children by dumping the bunn(s) at a shelter instead of coughing up for spaying/neutering ><

[Granted, I’ve heard worse reasons for ditching a bunny than being too cheap to pay $100 for a neuter… like my Norman, who was surrendered four days before last Christmas for “being too big” at 5.5ish lbs.  The most depressing part of it was that they probably dumped him so they could get a new, “cuter” pet for Christmas .  While his previous owners arguably deserve a swift kick in the shins with my steel-toe girly sneakers, the upside is that on Dec. 28th, I acquired myself a bonafide cuddle-bunn with airplane ears and my girls have become a bonded trio.]

Anyway, I’m looking for a reasonably cheap basket that can, ideally, hold my trio… failing that, at least 1-2 of them (Nala’s a 3.75 lb lionhead, Gaz is a 4.5 lb false dwarf Holland and Normie is a 5.5 lb sable mix):

I’m hoping to coerce one or more of them into keeping a stick-on Christmas bow on their head long enough for a photo op; then I’m going to photo-shop in a red circle with a line through it and make some bumper stickers to give out in anticipation of Easter to complement the website campaign I’m working on.

My overall goal is to try to educate people on what rabbit ownership entails *before* they impulse-purchase one or more “Easter” bunnies.  I’m not overly hopeful that I’ll reach anyone this time around, but I intend to make this an annual crusade of sorts by using Google AdWords, Craigslist (ugh), bumper stickers, etc. to lure traffic to a free website (and once I have things set up, I plan to talk to local shelters/rescues to see if they’ll pass out bumper stickers for me at my expense).  The way I see it, if I can prevent even one bunn from getting dumped at a shelter because they were an Easter gift that got hormonal, then it’s all worth it!

Such a great thing to do! I’m not sure about an actual Easter basket, but what about one of those large wicker baskets like at walmart and just decorate? All of the new baskets that I have seen are very ‘little kid-ish’, decorated as like a character from a show and such.

            Great project and message!
If you would like a cheap basket, maybe try goodwill or a thrift store?

You can get larger baskets at craft stores like Hobby Lobby. They often have a 40% off coupon in the newspaper.

I’d also check yard sales, flea markets, second hand shops, Salvation Army and, Goodwill stores as well as consignment shops. If all else fails a feed store or co-op will have large plastic totes in a variety of colors.

^ “little kid-ish” would actually work quite well for this

I didn’t think about checking Hobby Lobby – I’ll have to try that on Monday!  [They’ve actually always got a 40% off coupon online, too – this page will always have the current coupon; I’ve got it bookmarked! (JoAnns and Hancock Fabric also have bookmarkable pages for current coupons )]  I also need to hit up JoAnn’s soon and there’s a huge Goodwill right next to it… even if I don’t find a suitable basket, I’ll probably come home with some new bunny and/or sugar glider toys (since hard plastic toddler toys are potentially fun for both species) .

                    I think I found it!  Dimensions: 17 x 10.5 x 23 inches (W x H x L) and it’s only $4 at JoAnn’s!

What a steal! We expect pictures of the bunns in the basket now
