Tried this to clip my rabbit’s claws. She just kept yanking it off, wriggling insanely and chewing at the cotton towel. I eventually managed to clip the front claws but couldn’t clip the claws on the hind legs. She escaped and just lied down as if nothing happened. So I tried clipping her remaining claws while she’s chilling. She let me touch her legs and find her claw hidden inside that tuff of fur, but soon as I move the clipper near her, she tugged her leg inside her, and if I tried to yank it slowly back out, she’d get up, move, and lie down again. One of her front leg paw did bleed a bit. I clipped too near. Nail’s dark in colour so it’s hard to see. Can’t use my torch cause she keeps writhling. I relied on my room light which wasn’t that bright despite being 100watts.

Hoping once she reaches 6 months old she won’t get aggressive.    Will just leave the hind legs claws for now cause they’re not that long. Was 3 weeks ago when the breeder clipped them for me. I don’t want to go to the vets and pay that ridiculously expensive fee to clip some nails.

Will try again in 2-3 weeks time.

Do you have someone who can help you hold her while you clip?

I always say ‘don’t try to clip claws, groom, put on boots or brush your dogs teeth’-this is an achievement in training not something we do to them and hope they cope.
You don’t expect your animal to do anything else without training, but we expect them to suddenly put up with grooming, clipping, brushing etc.

Instead train your rabbit to let you touch him, let you touch his foot, let you hold his foot, let you hold one toenail, let you hold one toenail with a clipper etc-work up to it, do it slowly, use bribery

In the meantime, pay the vet to clip her nails so they don’t get out of control. On the side, train for her to slowly accept it.

I just pay the $15 to have my vet do it. Lulu fights me and it take forever so to me it’s worth having the vet do it. KokaneeandKahlua gave great advice though.

That was good advice (well maybe not the $15 at vet advice LoL) just whenever you get her out, give her feet a run down with your hand. If I don’t think my buns feet are clean enough, he has to get a wipe before hitting the carpet and he’s getting used to the fact that he’s fine with getting his feet touched. He’s pretty big, but I’m more determined to do what I need to do than he is to get away and even though it takes seconds, it seems to be enough so when I do clip his nails, he isn’t too bad. Someone said to use cornstarch on bleeding nails and it works like a charm!

Lol Megabunny I know! I wish I could do it myself still but the issue is I can’t cradle her long enough to do it:/ oh well. Plus she isn’t mad at me then

Ohhh!! Not that you’re asking my opinion, but I’ll throw in my 2 cents anyway if you don’t mind.
I don’t think I could do it alone if I cradled, but sometimes I can just sit them in my lap and contort myself to trim them in their standing/sitting position.
Anyway, I’m sure the vet doesn’t mind! I’m too lazy to go any more than I have to, even if they get mad at me Ha ha

Lol I’ve tried that too! Maybe she’s just extra picky… Oh well! She’s going in today for her mani pedi

Ha ha Have fun! My vet seems to really enjoy my bunnies, so it is fun to see them fussed over!

Our shelter will do it if we call them first to set up an appointment with someone on the rabbit team. One of us needs to be there to help, because it really does take two people to do it with minimal trauma to the clippers or the clippee. My daughter and I are a team now for doing Ellis’s nails. Fortunately, he’s getting used to us handling him and he only needs them clipped every 2-3 months.

What worked well for me was to move my rabbit to an unfamiliar area in order to trim his nails. Also I place him on a table/counter top so it’s easier for me to cradle him against me while I clip. Yea he’s a little grumpy about it afterwards but like with most things they’ll get over it after some time and a few treats lol.

It’s pretty hard. I tried covering Lily’s eyes last time, and it made it easier, though she still acted like I was murdering her. At least she forgives quickly.

Lily’s not big on being petted or touched at all when there’s no food to distract her, and if your rabbit’s the same way, a blindfold may help.

I used to go into the bathroom to do her nails since it was the smallest room and she couldn’t get away from me. After she would fight me forever we would finally be done, and as soon as I opened the door she would bolt to my room and wait by the dresser(where treats are hidden) and beg. Lol crazy girl always knew she would get a treat after any not fun thing we had to do but would always fight her little hardest to get away
