A little while back i posted about my bunny’s “red” urine problem. People told me it was probably just pigmented pee but being the paranoid person that i am I got it checked out. The results came back normal, the vet said there was no blood in it or anything.
Now, the thing is i didn’t collect Fluffy’s pee when it was red, i collected the normal yellow colour. Could this have led to a false reading? Could there be something in the red urine that wasn’t in the yellow one? Or does colour not matter- if something was in fact wrong, would it show up in both pees?

Sorry if my question doesn’t make sense D:

If there was blood it would be there at all times. Since the test was normal, I don’t think you have anything to worry about. Rabbits can pee a rainbow of colors form pale lemon yellow to dark rust red-orange and, be perfectly fine. Some foods can produce even stranger colors. Rarely you can see green, blue or cloudy (milky) urine. All diet related and, the only one that is a concern cloudy or milky, that means there is too much calcium in the diet and, it is being excreted because the rabbit cannot use that much. Simply reduce the calcium and that clears up.

Lemon to rust red are common and normal, it’s due to pigments in the food they eat.

Its not really rust red though, its BRIGHT red like fire truck red lol. But is it normal for this to be going on for a long time, cause it has been going on since November. It used to happen sometimes before when she would eat plants from outside, but not for this long and not this consistently. It would usually go away in a few days but now its almost like an everyday thing… I really want to know if anyone else experiences this or is it just me :/

You told your vet this? If so and he/she isn’t concerned I wouldn’t be either. I have heard many times over how food can colour a bunny’s wee. But in the next breath – is it coloured wee? or is it actual blood? I’m sure you can tell the difference, and if it’s just wee and you told your vet and didn’t get a negative response it should be ok. But if you didn’t tell the vet, just a quick phone call (free) may be the difference between worrying and not.
No, I have never experienced this, but have read a lot on BB regarding this issue. So at the end of the day, call the vet, explain your concern and let your vet decide if you need to take further action. In the meantime, others that have had a simular experience will be sure to jump in and let you know what they think too. Cheers marinabunny.

Yep in fact the vet tested the pee and it came out normal. But I gave them the yellow pee to test not the red pee so i was wondering if that mattered. I thought maybe if i had given them the red pee the results would show up different

As long as you told the vet that was the reason you were there because the wee was red, they would have noted that and as BM said it would have showed up in the test results regardless. Yep, put it down to food discolouration. No need to worry. But good for you to go to the vet to be sure – your a number 1 bunny mum! Fluffy is one lucky bunny!

The pee will sometimes change color and become brighter when it has been exposed to the air for awhile. So sometimes you will find spots that are drying up and they look differently than when the pee was fresh.

If the urine is uniform, the color is spread evenly, there is 99.9% chance that it is not blood but, pigmentation form environmental causes (usually food, though there have been reports of blue rabbit urine form wild rabbits near a chemical plant.) If it were blood, it would be splotches or clumps of dark red to coffee grounds looking splotches and, would not be a uniform color. Any problem that would cause blood in the urine would cause it to show up no matter the color of the urine, at least in amounts the lab tests could detect even if not visible to the naked eye.

The only thing I would check is if it’s cloudy (that’s too much calcium) and be sure your rabbit is getting enough water. If you have a water bottle, switch to a crock since rabbits will drink more form a dish than a bottle and, more water is good for them. If you already use a dish for water, make sure it is full and fresh at all times.

If you feed treats or food that are red, orange or, yellow try stopping those things and see if it doesn’t change in a few days. Even so, if it’s simply related to good for the rabbit foods, it isn’t a concern.

Usually its not blood if it is uniform, blood usually occurs in patches or clumps. Good job for going to the vet, I am sure she is fine. If the red pee occurs again, you can test it by mixing with hydrogen peroxide. If it bubbles, there is blood. Bunny pee does come in a rainbow of colors.
