Hi, my bun floppsy has been acting strange the past few days… I have had him say just over a month now! At first I put under his pen cage a fleece blanket that was warm and comfy, but in the past 3 days he has started chewing on it and pulling it apart  now I have had to remove it and place it with cardboard over the top so he doesn’t get a bad tummy.. I am worried that he has already swallowed quite a bit but he seems to be eating normally but just not as much as usual he also doesn’t want to be held much and trys to bite my legs when I place him down onto them for a cuddle.. I’m worried he doesn’t like me anymore hes never interested in anything but chewing stuff! hes good with his litter training and rarely does a wee or poop out of the box, just occassionly! I understand he has starting getting more hormones now but the vet says I have to wait till he is at least 6 months before I can get him neutered! Just please give me some tips on helping him be more of a happy bun! also I have already had to treat him for fleas from the garden once, and I think he may have them again.. oh my

Welcome to BB! Is that your bun in your avatar? Such a cutie!!!

His behavior sounds very normal for a young bunny prior to being neutered. They love to chew things (even after being neutered) but you might see that this behavior occurs more frequently when they are hormonal.

There isn’t too much you can do, just keep him entertained best you can with safe items. It’s good that you removed the blanket as it can be dangerous if they eat too many of the fibers.

How old is he now? Males can usually be neutered when the testicles descend between 3-4 months, but some vets do prefer to wait until 6 months. If the testicles are visible but that vet won’t neuter until 6 months, you might be able to find another vet that will do it sooner. Even after neutering, there will be a hormonal surge, so you might still see crazy behaviors for a month or two afterwards.

How did you treat him for fleas? If you use a flea preventative (NOT Frontline!) But one safe for bunnies (BB folks help me out here, I’m blanking on the name of the best product) then the fleas should not return. As bunnies get older they realize that they HATE being picked up or held so they start to protest. Let him come to you when he wants to.

your bunnys are very very cute!

Thankyou, yes that is my bun flopsie in my avatar! Thankyou for all the help, I just think it would be best for him if I had him neutered even though it is going to cost at least £63… ouch! because i’m hoping this will calm him down a little. He has now got more of a habitat for a rabbit, all over his cardboard floor I have placed hay and he seems to be enjoying laying in this more haha! he is about 13 or 14 weeks old now, and starting eating much more vegetables as I have been introducing them to him!

He tends to have crazy moments but I havent seen him to much binkying yet I just hope he is a happy bun, he tends to like hopping over my legs when I sit in his play room with him, do you recommend any good toys that bunnys love the most? he has got a few, but not many to play with outside of his cage? a tunnel made out of cardboard maybe? thanks

I treated him for fleas with a special one for rabbits called beaphar that I got from the pet store I bought him from! It worked before, but he seems to have caught them again! I have tried combing him with a flea comb but he just keeps running away, I am aware of the common rabbit diseases and he has had a combo vaccination against these, so the fleas will not give him a disease! yet is is scratching a lot and this must be very uncomfortable for him, shall I treat him again? It has been 4 weeks since last treatment, it says you can use it every 4 weeks? and its a prevention medicine also!

If you don’t have fleas in your home and, he isn’t going outside, I’d skip the flea treatment. As for being crazy at times, that’s normal hormonal behavior and, will clam down if you have him neutered, or as he gets older.

For toys, anything he can chew that moves like willow balls, treat balls that dispense a nibble when rolled about, etc… Even a toilet paper tube stuffed with hay makes a fun toy for a chew happy rabbit.
