My little Jack is shedding like there is no tomorrow. It is supper fine fuzz that just flies everywhere and his cage is full of it. Will he shed like this forever? Or just during season changes? Cause it is almost unbearable.

Rabbits shed throughout the year but what you’re probably noticing is a seasonable shed, they like to shed a ton of hair every couple months. Buying a cat brush seems to work for some people. I think they sell a well-favored brush in the BB store that people seem to like. My bunny is shedding too but he isn’t losing as much as I’ve seen other bunnies lose. I’ve also heard the more a bunny sheds daily the shorter the overall time period of the shed will be so hopefully this will pass quickly for you.

My Starsky (Brown and white spotted in my sig) Blows his whole coat twice a year but due to an unbelievably hot Summer he hasn’t stopped moulting since the last time…I’m hoping the cooler weather will help as there is constantly fur every wear… My Silver Fox Pascal (Big black bunny on the end) and Silver Marten Pepper (little black bunny in the middle) both have satin coats and even they are shedding in clumps at the moment. The only thing for it is to keep brushing and trying to capture as much of the stray hair as possible.

It can seem that they shed constantly, but it’s said that they molt 4 times a year (two heavy “seasonal” molts and two lighter molts). He might be in the middle of a big molt now. Not too much to do except keep up with daily grooming. Make sure he is eating a lot of hay and veggies everyday to assist with hydration and pushing any fur through the GI tract.

papaya tablets from Oxbow Animal Care will GREATLY reduce the chance of your bun getting a hairball. Since rabbits cannot cough hairballs up like cats, they just get stuck in their intestine and have to be surgically removed by a vet IMMEDIATELY, which, besides being stressful for your bun, is expensive. If you don’t want to use the papaya, i agree with Beka, brushing every day will help tons.

Actually hay is the best thing for digestion.

Also surgery is the very last thing for any blockage that you would want to have done. If your vet is suggesting that – see another vet.

But as long as your rabbit gets plenty of hay, exercise, and hydration you will be fine.

Those papaya tablets, while good treats, have a trace amount of the enzyme that could help break down the mucous that could surround the fur but really it’s not just fur that can cause blockages anyway.

That sounds like spring molt, or blowing his coat. It will subside in a week or two. In the meantime lots of hay and daily brushing are the best things for it. Year round rabbits should be brushed 2-3 times a week anyway, so a bit more during the two heavy molts isn’t a big deal.
