A few months ago one of my neighbors got 4 or 5 rabbits and she gave 2 to my cousin. I’m really happy my cousin took 2 because the rabbits that my neighbor still has are NOT well cared for at all. She keeps them in her backyard with no covering and none of them are fixed. I’m pretty sure she doesn’t give them veg or much hay. I’ve started keeping large bowls of water and some veg for the rabbits that get out (which they always do). It’s getting to be the summer months and being in AZ it gets into triple digits often. Anther worry is coyotes. they can get over every wall in here. She was keeping kittens back there, but the coyotes got them. She blamed a stray ct for eating them and started trying to shoot him with a BB gun. So if these poor buns don’t go into stasis they’ll get heatstroke or a coyote will get them. I have no idea what to do (Also the cat she had been shooting we have now taken in and he is very happy here.)

Do these people even want these bunnies? Is there a no-kill shelter you could refer them to? Are you on decent terms with these people? I don’t know if I want to suggest you call animal control if they are going to come back on you about it. But if they don’t have adequate shelter that would be one of the necessities that they are being denied and you might be able to get them confiscated that way. I called the shelter one time when I drove by a house that had a dog I didn’t think was in proper shelter and just asked them to go by and judge for themselves, but if you are the only neighbor who would know about them, that’s walking a thin line. You can’t keep taking all their pets but they sound like some real awful pet owners. What does your mom think?

They always say they love there animals, but my mom also thinks they are very irresponsible. The ASPCA here will only put the bunnies down. They also have birds and dogs. There 4 small dogs are always getting out and are aggressive towards responsible owners walking there dogs. Our old dog, Hatch who has recently passed, got his first strike. We were walking him and there dogs charged him so he attacked. I will look more into rabbit rescues. The only one I know of is Brambley Hedge. I would take them in, but she has to have like a dozen rabbits back there. It just makes me so worried because she has 2 kids and is pregnant with a third. Her oldest is 5 and she has leukemia. I caught one of the baby buns the other day and him was only about the size of my hand. I was able to sex him and I believe he is a male, but I can’t really tell. He looked very skinny so I got my mom to bring out celery and bok choy I had. He gobbled a lot of it up. I think they might be angora or lionheads. A lot of them also have lop ears. I’ll email Brambley and see what they can do. I’ll also talk to some of the local vets to see if they know anyone.

Gosh that sound like an awful situation. Good for you though to take notice and try! I hope you get somewhere in the search for the sake of these bunnies, and by the sound of it the other animals too. This lady should definitely have these animals re homed so she can focus on her children, who also probably really need help. I hope things work out!! If I was near you I’d just say let’s go break them out

Would she be bringing in all of these pets to possibly indulge the child with Leukemia ?

Possibly. She is in remission now which is fantastic.

That is a very sad situation. People like that make a very difficult situation for us animal lovers.

I would get in contact with rabbit rescues. Sounds like they are just going to keep multiplying and, probably, dying, if no one steps in.

                    Here’s another Arizona rescue:

I’ll never understand why some people decide to take on more pets when they can’t be responsible for one …sigh..
