        Hi everyone!

A few months ago I got my first ever bunny! He’s a 2 year old Holland lop that I got from a friend. He gets a lot of attention when I’m home, but a couple of days a week I work 12-13 hours, so he’s alone all day those days, plus the other days I work, although those are only 5-6 hour days. I feel bad leaving him alone, but I’ve heard mixed opinions on whether or not rabbits absolutely need another rabbit with them. Some people say they get lonely by themselves, others say it doesn’t really matter. So I’m not sure if I should look into getting another rabbit or not.

Just looking for some opinions on this from rabbit experts!

A lot of bunnies do do better with a friend. I have heard a lot from both sides too. I think some of it has to do with personality as well. Some bunnies are more independent, so they are perfectly fine doing their own thing. Other bunnies need another bunny to feel secure. So I think when making a decision about getting another rabbit, you should take all factors into consideration (and that would include your rabbit’s personality). Don’t feel like it is absolutely necessary though. You want the new addition to benefit your current bunny, which means there is the possibility that a new addition would not be beneficial.

I think it depends. I think some are perfectly fine without a friend, and some do much better with one. As LBJ said, some are more dependent or independent. It’s not absolutely necessary and with human interaction bunnies live a perfectly happy life. Bonding is also pretty stressful (on human and rabbits) so it’s not something to take on lightly. There were days when I spent 4 hours bonding and hated every minute of it – I was unemployed and can’t imagine finding the time to do that with a full time job.

If you want another rabbit, make sure you’re ready for the increase in cost and care, and be prepared for a long bonding period, or for them to not bond at all.

I will say that it’s so much fun to watch them interact, and they really do get joy from one another. I have an independent holland lop boy who didn’t really need a friend, and a dependent mini lop girl who desperately wanted a friend. My boy would have been just fine on his own, but it does make me feel better to know that he has a buddy when I’m not home or able to spend time with them.

Need a companion no? The rabbit will live without one and, will enjoy interacting with you more but, if you don’t have a lot of time to spend with your rabbit, or you want to give him the experience of having another to interact with he, will, once they get to know each other) enjoy a companion.
