Okay So I just brought a new bunny home today. Everything seemed fine in fact he was already seeming to bond with our older bunny. I always leave the cage open because its what I use for a litter box. So they both got out and were running around exploring I was watching them so that I could start making sure to clean up pee and put it in the box when I noticed he had what looked like a bloody pee that I can only think must be diarrhea. Obviously they get stressed on a first day so I expected maybe a lil bit of a loose stool but not this. I realize that this is something that is a vet related topic but its late and will have to wait til tomorrow. I’m just a little nervous tonight as I have read some horror stories. Tonight I made a water mix for him that I found on another thread with 1 cup of water some baking soda salt sugar. He seems to be drinking and eating fine. So to the question at hand is there anything else I should be doing for him? And should I separate my older bunny? I dont want to stress him out more but if he has coccidiosis I dont want my other bunny to get it. He’s being active eating and drinking. I took the pellets away (pellets that they gave us so not to shock his digestive system) So is there anything else I can do tonight? Anyone else have this problem?

        Thanks so much in advance

Bunny urine can be dark red or even a deep rusty brown… If it looked more like urine then it probably was…Different diets can cause different colours from whitish right through to the deep reddish browns.
I would still go to the vet as a baseline check is the best idea with any new bunny…..

No worries, it can be pretty scary if you are not aware of it… I will never forget the infamous “Pee to the head” battle between Nermal and Pipi, Pipi had bitten Nermal on the butt through the Xpen, Nermal’s response was to spray Pipi in the head… They had been eating greens and craisins and the pee was bright red… I nearly had a heart attack when I first saw it, I thought that Nermal had attacked Pipi. Bright red pee on a fluffy white head can be a bit of a heart starter.

I always suggest separating a new bunny for a couple of weeks, or until he’s had a vet health check. I suggest you take him into to get a wellness check as this is recommended with any new bunny.

Hey. Good to hear you have a bun that is already getting along with your other one.  But I’d keep them separate too at first.  Yes, if your bun’s urine looks dark and you’ve fed carrots or some other foods, it would do as they said. But if it is red red, maybe it’s like Roberta said, but could also be a problem. Rabbits don’t always stop eating, as they have to keep up their strength in the wild, so don’t use their behavior/appetite as the sole decider of whether bunny is ok or not. Why did the other people get rid of this bunny? Usually it’s because the people are just tired of them, but maybe it had other issues you don’t know about?

best of luck with your new baby
