Holly turned 12 weeks last week and had her first ever Romaine!  I picked Romaine because I thought it would be a good/safe starting point. I started off with one small piece and slowly increased the amount all week. She did great! No tummy upset and she really enjoys it. I can barely put the bowl down now without her running over and munching down the whole thing.

I think she’s ready for a second veggie now, what would you all suggest thats popular with your buns? I was thinking of trying endive, basil or kale because they’re on the list as being lower in oxalic acid. I’d also like to try a small piece of fruit. Would that be too much?

Anyway, these are pictures I took when I gave her her first piece of romaine.

Edit- One thing I forgot to ask. Is the calcium in kale too high for a young bun, or should it not matter because she’s healthy?

          Oh my gosh she’s gorgeous!!!

Interesting you’ve started with veggies on week 12. I was wondering if I could already introduce small pieces of veggies. My bunnies are currently 7-8 weeks old.
What about carrots? My old bunny (rip) loved those.

Cute. Kale is fine. I feed my rabbits kale every single day. You don’t need to worry about calcium amounts in green veggies. Rabbits need calcium.

I thought about giving her a small piece of carrot as a treat when she’s ready, Ellekke. I dont want to try too many new things at one time though. I do give her the occasional banana treat (dehydrated, no sugar), so maybe a small piece of fresh banana would be good to try, too.

And great, Sarita! I’ll definitely try kale then. Thanks!

I start mine on basil, so I’d go with that next. My order is Basil, dandelion, parsley, clover, grass, spinach, fruits, kale and cabbage, anything else I expect them to eat for fresh food like berry leaves and vines, mint, etc…

Fresh banana would be fine if she already eats dried and, try a bit of dried strawberry too – just a bite or two to get her used to more variety in her treats.

I liked the idea of basil too because its more aromatic. I’ll pick up some dried strawberry next time too. Whats a good amount of treats to give? I’ve been giving her a quarter to a half of one treat every other day. I’d like to give her more but I was worried it was too much.

That’s about right for starters, half a banana slice or strawberry slice to 16 weeks, then a whole slice. With the other greens add a little more every 3-5 days until by 6 months you are giving about 1.5 to 2 cups a day of fresh greens.

If you see soft poo, back off a little on the greens and add more back a bit more slowly. If there is just normal poo, you are doing great at introducing new foods.

Ohhhhhh Katie – Holly is still sooo adorable! And her ears! They have not let me down – they are the bestest, cutest ears I have ever seen!!!!!!!

I had never ‘heard’ of Kale before BB, and it is my Henry’s favourite veggie and he gets a bit everyday too. After hearing how every bun loves basil, I bought a big bunch and the little bugga didn’t eat/like it, even though I persisted till it went yucky and eventually threw it out. So just a reminder that not every bun loves every veg. For treats – Henry’s favourite is ‘craisins’ 1st, then banana. The craisin’s are already chopped up into small pieces, so Henry gets one of those everyday/second day, and a slice of banana the same. (My hubby has a fascination with Henry and his banana and is known to do a banana run when he run’s out – silly hubby!) Lol!

And Ellekke, yes the 3 month mark is a good time to introduce veggies. A few do it a bit earlier, but 3 months is the average. And carrots should be considered a treat food as they are high in sugar (who knew – I didn’t till I got Henry, ha ha ha!). So Henry gets the ends that I cut off the carrot when I am making dinner. So yes, there is a very high chance your bunny will LOVE carrots too!

Katie, I have never seen Henry hold his ear’s out like Holly is in that last pic – did you sticky tape them out like that???? LOL! I “love” them!!!!!!

                            Thanks LittlePuffyTail and AndHenry!!

I’m having SUCH a hard time finding “craisins” with no added sugar, its crazy! I’m sure I’ll eventually come across them (hopefully lol), but never thought it would be difficult…

Didn’t you say your Henry chases after your hubby when he’s eating a banana waiting for his share? lol That’s too adorable! Holly now knows the sound of treat bags and as soon as I pick one up she stands up and does “helicopter ears”. haha Her ears are SO expressive. My favorite aside from both ears straight out is one up and one down. It’s so funny. Sometimes I question her “loppiness” because when she’s playing they’re hardly ever down (how they are in the last picture is pretty much her norm lol). I wonder if that changes with age? How old was Henry when you brought him home?

Henry was 9 weeks old, (so he is a year old this month – shame I don’t know his actual birth date) and he has never done the helicopter ears – I am SO jealous of Holly! Lol! Keep posting her ‘ear’ pic’s and I’ll be her biggest fan for life! Ha ha ha ha…..

Yep, Henry and his banana. If it’s ripe (smelly) he will zoom to the hubby, and take out a wall if taking a sharp left on the way – it is funny!
And as soon as he hears the craisin bag crinkle he knows it’s bunny kiss time! I ALWAYS give him his craisin from my lips (sorry everyone is that is gross) but I love it when his soft little lips ever so gently touch mine to get the craisin. And that is the ONLY love he shows ME.

I wouldn’t worry to much about trying to find the ‘sugar free’ craisins – I buy the OceanSpray brand here in Australia, and for the little piece he gets I’m not concerned. I have never seen ‘no added’ sugar craisin’s, only one’s with an imitation sugar and I remember a BBer saying it is better to give the original craisin’s as the artificial sugar wasn’t good for bunny’s.

Henry loves his craisin’s SO much, sometimes he reaches up to my lips again on the chance I have second’s….. ha ha hah…. LOVE craisin’s!

LOL I wish I could have Holly unconfined so I could see her zoom around the house like that! Hopefully after she’s spayed we’ll be able to do so. I’d love if she ran for goodies like Henry, that’s just so cute and smart. It’s good to know you use the OceanSpray ones, we actually always have a big bag of them in my house, too.

I’d give Holly lip kisses too if she wasn’t such a nibbler! haha Definitely not gross at all. I’m willing to bet a bunnies mouth is cleaner than a humans anyway! Holly does this funny thing where she’ll start licking you, then licking turns to nibbles. It’s kind of cute, but I’ve been getting her to stop by saying “OW” when she starts biting. It’s been working slowly.

That is weird that Holly does helicopter ears and Henry doesn’t. I wonder if it’s that he cant, or just doesn’t. It would be interesting to hear if other lop owners have seen this because, seeing Holly do it, I assumed all lops did. lol

Yep, once she’s spayed + a few weeks, I reckon she should be good to go free range (just watch out for the early morning wake up’s). Actually, seeing you have a ‘great’ setup for Holly already, I would suggest letting her free roam from when you wake up, but put her to bed when you go to bed. Henry not only wakes us, the trouble he gets into while we are asleep???? If I had a proper bunny house/set up, I would put Henry to bed too. But his house is really crap (trying to think of a word and crap was the most accurate, doh!), cause we made it ourselves and it’s just to house his hay, water bottle and toilet and enough room to lay when he wants to really snub us. (He’s such a brat!), LOL!
And yes – I did the loud OW too when Henry nipped/bit my toe, and he hasn’t done it since, so I reckon that works!
Henry has never done the helicopter ears, but I think he’s just to lazy and spoilt to be bothered, ha ha ha……. so I would love to know too if anyone else’s lop bunny does it too? I wonder who is the exception? Holly for doing it – or Henry for not????? Hopefully some lop BBer’s will let us both know?
                                  Cheers Katie.

PS – Henry’s food (veg and pellets) is located where the dog food used to be placed. He kept eating the dog food, so thought if we moved his food there he would eat his ONLY? Na! He went back to eating the dog food, so it is now placed outside. I can’t believe my dog’s haven’t chucked a tanty (I would) and still tolerate Henry? The dog’s were here first (up to 15 years) and Henry (10 months) has taken over the ‘whole’ house! Work that one out? LOL! Did I say Henry was a spoilt brat?????

You may have to make your own “craisins” it isn’t hard, all you need is a bad of cranberries (those are usually 12 oz.) a non stick cookie sheet (the dark coated kind, not the shiny silver ones) and your oven. Wash the cranberries (just to be sure), spread them on a towel to dry off the excess water then, scatter them on the cookie sheet. bake them at 200 (or lower if your oven goes lower) for 1.5 to 3 hours (depending on your oven.) let them cool and bag them. If you only have one or two rabbits, you’ll want to freeze them in week sized bags so they last longer.

If you have a food dehydrator, you can put them in there instead of the oven.

LOL it sounds like your Holly has the old “lick, lick chomp” down to an art form. Try a high pitched half whistle, half squeal (like an hurt, frightened rabbit) I’d bet she gets the message quickly that way. give her the “OH NO, I hurt my favorite human!” lesson I’ve done that to a couple of mine that liked to give love nibbles, worked like a charm and, you can’t help but laugh at the confused, then pitiful look you get from a rabbit when you make that sound. If they spoke English it would be “Huh? On no, so sorry, I promise I’ll be better, I’m sorry.”

Andi, Holly’s sleep habits are SO strange. I think she thinks she’s a cat or dog because I swear she sleeps when I do and wakes up when I do. I’ve only been woken a couple times so far and it was because I slept too late. lol As soon as I’m up she’s up doing mad dashes all over the place. I think the only REAL danger to her being free range is to my hair. I can see her jumping up on the bed while I’m napping and totally eating my hair. Every time it’s in reach to her she goes for it. lol

Henry sounds super spoiled! (Is it “spoilt there? I really enjoy seeing the differences in how people speak and slang in other places vs. the US) I bet if you ever did try to put him to bed at night he’s throw a fit! lol I’m sure he loves coming and going as he pleases.

BlueMoods, Thanks for the recipe! Saved me from having to google it. lol And she definitely has the “lick, lick chomp” down. I actually find it pretty cute and am not too bothered by it. The only reason I’m trying to stop it is because I’m worried she’ll do it to someone else and they’ll get startled and accidentally hurt her, not knowing she doesn’t mean any harm… I think she just gets a little too enthusiastic sometimes. haha

Spoilt/spoiled – different spelling but means the same in any language! LOL! My English is the worst ever and I am a bugga for using Aussie slang/abbreviations.
Oh yes, if I was to ever put Henry to bed I would HAVE to put the dog’s to bed too – than I would have an inhouse riot! ha ha ha ha…..
Most definitely, if Holly promises to be a good girl (? he he he….) while your asleep, leave her out. There is nothing better than waking up to bunnybutt in your face first thing in the morning! HA HA HA….. serious! And since Henry was neutered he only wee’d on my bed once and I’ve had no bunny wee/poop since! It’s wonderful! Maybe a granny hair net to save the hair????? LOL! This is sooo funny! Cheers!
Do you want me to post a pic of Henry in bed for you? (YES! I finally learnt to post piccy’s!!!! YAY!), ha ha ha!

I’ve read you aren’t supposed to start fruit til 7 months. I gave Gus a small piece of apple when he was about 4 months old because I didn’t know better and he got diarrhea and I cried and was terrified all night that he was going to die, as I know really young rabbits sometimes get bad diarrhea and just die and I was so afraid that was happening, even though he was a bit older. Another piece of fruit never passed his lips till he was 7 months old.
It is fun, though, to get going on goodies, isn’t it??

I didn’t hear that but now I’m nervous. lol I’ve been giving her dried fruit (tiny, tiny pieces) since a couple weeks ago and she never had a problem. I’m still religiously watching her litter box after every salad though. lol It’s gets cleaned right before she eats it so I can monitor everything. It’s a little bit of an obsession now. haha

Yup! Thank goodness for digital cameras/cellphones! You can just delete what doesn’t turn out! Idk if your camera/phone has a “burst” mode. You can take multiple shots at once. That’s nice for action pictures!

Fruit can be introduced when veggies are, just in very limited amounts. They can’t have a lot, so it needs to be something that you/your family eats too, otherwise it’ll go bad. Banana is a favorite here. We have that Nutribullet blender for making smoothies, so I can just break off a bit of whatever we’re having in there… 🙂

Hey Katie. I’m having problems posting pic’s this morning? It happens (to me) on occasion. Anyhow, I posted a pic of Henry and his pals in bed on the March picture thread. I’m sure you will love it! he he he he……
Yer, for the very small amount of fruit you will wanna give Holly, even when she gets older, I’m with Beka – Henry only gets a little bit of what we eat too, why the hubby has taken up eating banana’s himself? Lol! We did buy a small bag of craisins just for Henry (cause we don’t eat them) a few months ago, and for the tiny bit he gets – the small resealable bag is still lasting him.
And I have to be honest (sorry MB), but I gave Henry his first bit of fruit too when I introduced veggies to him, and he was all good. But I’m sure Henry has a tummy made of steel – the stuff that he has eaten?????? Naughty bunny! Ha ha ha…. Cheers Katie.

Beka27, I’m not sure how anyone managed to take good bunny pictures before digital anything! lol And that’s a really good idea about making your own smoothies. I’ve actually been considering buying one of those fancy juicers (but they’re so darn expensive!).

Andi, I’ll go look at your pic now, I can’t wait! haha I’m sure it’s adorable. And good thing I like bananas, too (and craisins), nothing will go to waste!

I’m so nervous about Holly getting into something she shouldn’t! Today I dropped a plastic bag next to her pen and before I could even bend down to get it she had already dashed over and tried to pull it into her pen. LOL silly girl!

Instead of a juicer, get a Ninja. I have both, never use the juicer anymore since I got the Ninja. It makes smoothies perfectly, purees whole fruits and vegetables so you keep all of the fiber, juice, nutrition and, it doubles as a food processor for making dough, meat based sandwich spreads, chopping, mincing, crushing ice, etc… Much better value for the money. I even use mine to make bunny mush for rabbits that don’t want to eat enough on their own, just whiz up their normal diet with a little water, rice milk or, extra fresh thing for the moisture. (If they can’t be coaxed to eat that, it’s time for Critical Care in my book.)
