My rabbit seemed fine yesterday. However, he hasn’t eaten any of his pellets all day, and only eaten a tiny bit of hay. I decided to give him his salad, but he just smelled it and hopped away. I also tried giving him some of his favorite treats and fruits and he just smells them and turns his head.

He is also sitting in a weird way. He looks very uncomfortable and isn’t moving around a lot. He’s only gets up to use the litter box. He has been peeing and pooping all day which is why this is so puzzling.

Whenever i open up his cage, he’s usually always peppy and cuddly, but today he seems so tired and sleepy.

I’m not sure what it is, but he even refused a banana. Now that’s what worried me the most.

Am i just being paranoid or should i keep monitoring him? or call the vet, i’m not entirely sure what to do right now.

ps. he is a 3.5 pound neutered male, mini rex, 1 year old

        thanks

Best have him seen by a vet as soon as you can arrange it.
You are not being paranoid. These are signs something is up.

Yes, vet as soon as possible. Rabbits can go downhill pretty fast if its stasis. Seeing as he has pooped though, most likely its just gas. Go get Gas X chewables or infant gas drops and give it to him. It might help with some of his discomfort if it is gas pain. Also try tummy massages to try and break up any gas bubbles. Try and keep him active as it helps break it up as well.

Sending vibes for the both of you

It is serious, but if you’re having trouble finding a vet today (it’s Sunday here, don’t know what day you have), please try simethicone and tummy massages as described in this article: http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/ileus.html

Scroll down to “Mechanical treatments” for instructions on how to gently massage the bunny-tummy. Since there’s been poop, a blockage isn’t likely, so a tummy-massage could be very helpful. While you do it, listen for slurping sounds from the bunny-tummy (like the sounds a hungry human tummy can make), they can be quite loud and means the intestines are starting to move.

You can do this while waiting for a vet to take your call or if you have to wait for sb to take you to a vet etc. This can be really serious as others have pointed out, so you need to act now.

Please report back on how he’s doing.

Okay, so when i woke up this morning, he had eaten everything. All his hay, pellets, and salad. He is very energetic right now, and is acting pretty normal. He accepting food and is running around a lot.

He does has some larger shaped stools in his litter box, but they are still solid and not runny at all. However, those could be from last night.

He seems normal and fine, but I’m still wondering if there is a concern. Should I take him to the vet today or just call them, or is he fine now?

Clean his litter box so you can monitor his poop, and keep an eye on his food and water intake for a few days. If all seems normal, I would say you are off the hook.

I agree with LEL. There’s not much a vet can do if the (probable) gas has passed. Keep an eye on him, monitor food intake, water, pee, and poop and general demeanour.

Glad to hear he’s so much better!.

I have a bunny that often gets gas and acts very similarly to what you were describing occurred with your bunny. I keep Gas-X on hand for these occasions and it helps him a lot. I crush up the Gas-X between two spoons and then I use a small syringe to squirt a little water in with the gas-x. Then I mush it around with the tip of the syringe and try to suck up as much of the Gas-X as I can, and then squirt it in his mouth. Then I give him a tummy massage and then try to get him to move around a little bit. That usually makes him more comfortable and he will usually eat within 2-3 hours. Glad to hear he is feeling better!

One of mine goes through this once or twice a year – she will stop eating for a day, but then recovers without needing the vet. Since I know it’s common for her, I keep Critical Care in the house and start force feeding when I notice she isn’t eating. If she isn’t back to normal in about 24 hours I call the vet, but usually that does the trick. The first time it happened I did take her to the vet though, to make sure it wasn’t more serious, so it kind of depends on the rabbit and whether it’s normal for them to get brief periods of gas or not.

Like MooBunnay I too keep simethicone (baby gas-drops) in my fridge since Bam had his first bout of gas/stasis. I’ve had to use it a few times and I definitely swear by it, togeather with tummy-rubs. It feels safe to have it in the house – if it doesn’t help, it won’t harm, it’s not absorbed into the body, it just lubricates.

HI. I just got a bunny from my neighbors and we’ve only had him a few days, but I’ve bunny sat him before and I’ve noticed that he’s not eating a lot.I’m really concerned about him. Is it just anxiety from moving to a new house or is it maybe really serious ? Please reply.
