I now have a very grumpy bunny. He is already grumpy by nature, but since I weaned him off alfalfa (I was late, so he was 15 months, I had been trying to wean him off, so he has only been getting a small handful with unlimited timothy) he has been super difficult. He has really abrupt mood changes and will not eat his hay (I have two kinds of timothy and orchard grass both Kaytee), he has been biting (softly) people, and just has been acting weird.

        He is now getting:

        Unlimited orchard grass

        Unlimited timothy hay

~1/6 cp pellets (he is 3 pounds)

        lettuce (around 2-3 cps)

Anyone else have this issue? If so, how did you solve it/how long does the “withdrawal” last??

        Thanks!

Hello, my name is Simba and I’m an alfalfaholic.
My bun is on day 8 of “The Wean” and he’s definitely Mr. Grumps. It took 6 days before he’d even TRY the hay. He eats it but he now prefers pellets (which he previously wasn’t that crazy about). Worried about his teeth if he doesn’t eat as much hay. They can be little stinkers.

Would some dried mint help entice him?

Stickers only got alfalfa for the rest of the little bag she came with, so I started to wean her off immediately (she was already 4 months when I adopted her, so it was well past time!). She REFUSED hay for about a week and she would NOT touch the “harder” hays. She would only eat oxbow orchard. I’ve since introduced her to several types of hay, but she still only eats oxbow orchard (not kaytee, that stuff is too dry for her) and horse quality brome from our local farm. Hiding craisins into the hay helps tempt her to it, but she still only eats what she wants.

Can you get different brands of hay? I think Petsmart sells bags of Oxbow. Maybe a different hay will entice him?

They only have a Petco here, and that has VERY few options. I’ll check Amazon though! He finally tried the orchard grass, so we’ll see how it goes!.

Mine used to be fed unlimited Timothy until the cost went up in our area and now it’s used more as a supplement alongside normal meadow hay. Although it’s fibre content isn’t as much as Timothy any hay is generally better than no hay as it still wears down their teeth and keeps their digestive system going. This will at least get home used to hay and gradually he’ll try new types when he figures out it’s not so bad!
