I have a two part question:

I know there is a lot of mixed information about what to give and what veggies not to give and then also how to give it.

I’m just curious about what veggies you guys give your buns?  Right now my husband and I just rescued Rorschach (3 days ago) from a Rabbit Rescue and they were just giving him lettuce, so that’s all I’m giving him now (he also gets unlimited hay and 1/5 cup of pellets a day).  The rescue said he’s a teenager so I should start weaning him down on pellets and expanding greens.

Then the second part is how do you all introduce new veggies?  A leaf one day then wait?

        Thanks!

There are lists of what veggies are safe to feed rabbits as well as what proportion of their diets they should be, as some, like Romaine (hope you’re not giving iceburg) can be a large part of the daily salad, whereas carrots and parsley need to be a much smaller percentage. I think there’s a list on this site somewhere, but if not, the House Rabbit Society has one. Google will bring it up quickly.

Hi BolingbrookMom, congratulations on your new addition Rorschach (I hope he is helping you heal). Yep, just give one new veg at a time, just so you can see if he reacts to it? My boy must have a tummy of steal, luckily I’ve had no problems introducing any veg. I’m a big veggie eater myself, so as I’m preparing our meal, Henry’s dish sits on the counter and he gets the ends/scraps, so he gets a good variety every day. I have even learned that he doesn’t like ‘stuff’ eg., zucchini! and don’t even bother to put it in his dish anymore, ha ha. I have even started buying stuff that I didn’t eat before (like sweet potato – not ‘white’ potato) cause I know Henry likes it. I also buy particular veg just for him, like his Kale. Each time I wanted to him to try something new, if I hadn’t heard of other BBer’s using it for their buns I just checked the ‘NO NO’ list to make sure first. For example, some BBer’s believe that you shouldn’t feed a bun cabbage? A few of us do and it is all good and my Henry loves it. Some of the other veg I give Henry is lettuce (NOT iceberg), broccoli, cauliflower, (and all the surrounding leaves), parsley, carrot (just the ends from cutting up dinner cause it is a ‘treat’), and a bit of pumpkin when I have it on occasion (but NO seeds). Oh, and I’m lucky enough to have a mulberry tree, so Henry gets a good constant supply of mulberry leaves which are very healthy for bunnies. Hope this has helped you out a little BolingbrookMom. Enjoy your new guy. Cheers.

Here is the House Rabbit Society article and it does a great job of explaining just what you want to know:

              http://rabbit.org/suggested-vegetables-and-fruits-for-a-rabbit-diet/

It seems like a long article but it’s very interesting and chock full of good information and written by a very rabbit knowledgeable vet.

in the top menu there is a very informative tab called Bunny Info that might help you find what you are looking for

                https://binkybunny.com/BUNNYINFO/tabid/53/CategoryID/2/PID/940/Default.aspx

                the green/veggies part says:
                Greens/Veggies (Minimum 3 different types)

When introducing greens for the first time – offer just one at time. Add new one in after a few days. If a bunny snubs a particular leafy green. Just keep adding a little bit to the diet even if they have snubbed it before. I’ve done this thinking my bunnies would never eat it, but then one day they decide to try it and end up liking it. And even if your bunny snubs one or two types permanently, there are plenty others to choose from.

also, the link in there is like my bible. a bit long but very good info… there is a lot in the list that i give to my buns but i found some more to give. you can stick to the list but if you ever wonder just search for it on the forum or ask.

I have found that lettuce (red leaf, green leaf, romaine) is Lola’s LEAST favorite veg. Her absolute favorites are dandelion leaves (I can sometimes buy them at my local grocery in the organic section) and cilantro. She also likes kale, mustard greens, collard greens, endive, carrot tops and parsley. I have a list of veggies on an index card that I keep in my purse and pull out every time I go to the grocery.
