My breeder told me to give a small amount of these reddish colored pellets to my baby bunny each day mixed into his regular greenish colored pellets until the bag runs out then I don’t need to anymore. My bunny LOVES these pellets and devours them the minute I add them to his food bowl. I cannot contact the breeder. What are they/where can I buy some??!! And can I keep giving them to him when he runs out or are they not good to keep eating? Thanks!

That doesn’t look like something a bunny should be eating… I have never heard of giving those pellets (whatever they are) to bunnies. My advice would be to stop use of those pellets as you don’t know what they contain. The bunny doesn’t need them, and the fact that he loves them so much compared to regular pellets makes me wonder. What is his diet like besides these red pellets?

I know it’s a mystery I have no idea what they are but he loves them! He is a holland lop, only two months old. His main diet consists of show formula feed (greenish pellets) with a makeup of Yucca root, papaya, and probioitics (the breeder recommended it to me). He also eats plenty of fresh cut timothy hay and occasionally I give him an apple/carrot special treat the breeder sold me a bag of (which he loves!) No fruits or vegetables until he is older.

Assuming this is not artificial coloring, the reddish tint is likely from plant pigments. Maybe carrot?

That is Calf Manna from Man Pro Feeds, you can look it up online. It is a supplement that many like to give to young, pregnant, nursing or working animals. It can be fed to horses, cattle, goats, pigs and, rabbits.

Here is the website that tells you why it’s good for rabbits. I feed it to young rabbits and, to newcomers here for a few weeks. They love the stuff and, it gives them the extra nutrition they need for growing or, when they are stressed from moving and, may not be eating as much as they should. It’s good stuff and perfectly safe to feed.

Followed the link to find the nutritional information. Corn?! Holy cow, no wonder your bunny liked it! This is not a good food and definitely not something he should be fed long term.

There is way too much protein and not enough fiber.

                  Crude Protein Min 25.00% <——- !!!!
                  Lysine Min 1.4%
                  Methionine Min 0.3%
                  Crude Fat Min 3.0%
                  Crude Fiber Min 3.0%
                  Crude Fiber Max 6.00% <——- !!!!
                  Acid Detergent Fiber Max 10.0%
                  Calcium Min 0.7 %
                  Calcium Max 1.2 %
                  Phosphorus Min 0.6 %
                  Salt Min 0.5 %
                  Salt Max 1.0 %
                  Sodium Min 0.2 %
                  Sodium Max 0.4 %
                  Copper Min 15 ppm
                  Copper Max 35 ppm
                  Selenium Min 0.1 ppm
                  Zinc Min 125 ppm
                  Vitamin A Min 20,000 IU/lb

Feeding instructions are to give growing rabbits one TEASPOON per day. So obviously this is meant to be a supplement to help them put on weight.

The site listed even says it’s for when animals are having issues – such as a kit not growing, or a doe not producing enough milk. If your bun is eating fine otherwise, I would just let him have his normal pellets and stop with that stuff. It’s a nutritional supplement that most healthy rabbits won’t need.

Thanks Blue Moods!! That’s it! I have been giving him less than a teaspoon per day, and he is eating his normal food. Is it bad to give it to him after I run out? Should I not buy anymore?

I agree with Stickerbunny. It really isn’t necessary. It’s a supplement that is meant for animals having issues. If your bunny is eating the regular pellets just fine, then there is no need to keep giving these to him. You run the risk of him getting used to eating this stuff, which could easily make him fat in the long term.

No, don’t get more I feed it to 12 weeks of age, then only the last week and through nursing for pregnant does, and for just a week on new rabbits to my home.

Think of it as a pellet form of Critical Care – for short term use when the rabbit needs an extra nutritional boost because it isn’t eating enough hay and normal rabbit pellets, or is sick or a fast growing breed that has recently been weaned. It isn’t life long feed and, 1 tsp per day is the most you want to feed even for a month or so. (I never feed it more than 6 weeks straight to any rabbit but, it is good to have it around if you have multiple rabbits for an emergency feed you can grab in a hurry. Rabbits will eat that a lot of times when they aren’t eating anything else.)

Okay, that makes sense. Thanks for your explanation. I just wish I could continue to give him even less than a teaspoon per day as a treat because he really does love it!

There are plenty of treats rabbits love that you can try. Fruit is something most rabbits go crazy for, which works as a good SMALL QUANTITY treat. My two will attack me for some craisins and banana is not something I can eat around them unless it is so far out of their reach they can’t jump/climb to get to it. You can begin introducing fresh foods to him (slowly) when he’s old enough (I don’t know how old your baby is)

If he loves it, as most do, use it as a training treat, one pellet at a time. I’ll bet he learns all sorts of things to do to get even one of those red pellets. That way he might get 4 or 5 pellets a day is all and, that would be fine.

Sure wish I could get calf manna in small amounts. I used to feed it to my chinchillas when I was breeding them (no, not for coats!) I think my sick little girl would love some!

I purchased a bag and was going to do as Blue Moods suggested, only give him a pellet or so at a time as a training method for a small treat (with a max of 5-6 pellets per day…shouldn’t be harmful). However, he seems to have little to no interest in the Calf Manna, whereas with the food I showed above he would literally attack with joy! Pretty upset considering I had to buy a 10lb bag for $15! Don’t want it to go to waste…
