Hi all! I am new here and I’ve had my bunny for about one month. He drinks from a dish and seems to be kind of a secretive drinker. He won’t drink if the dish gets even slightly low so I am always filling it back to the top but this means I never really know how much water he takes in each day. I’m worried he’s not drinking enough. Has this happened to any of your rabbits? Do you think I should switch to a water bottle?

        Thanks!

You could try a water bottle if you want, but as long as the droppings and such seem normal, I don’t know if you have to really worry. How old is he and is he getting fresh veggies? Certainly there’s water in those. Welcome and enjoy your new bunny!

Where was he before you brought him home? Do you know if he was using a bowl or bottle? Bowls are a more natural way for rabbits to drink, but if he was accustomed to a bottle before, he might prefer that. I would offer both.

Is he getting veggies yet? When you rinse them, you can leave a little extra water on there to increase his water intake.

Also, the more fresh foods (vegies, fruits, greens) he eats, the less he needs to drink water, he gets water form those things as well. I’d offer both the bottle and the dish and see which he prefers, he will let you know what he likes best.

Mine prefer the nibblers of my automatic system. (with 13 that is the easiest means of insuring they all have access to fresh water all of the time.) Most grew up with that so, they don’t like it when I am cleaning the system and have to put bowls out for them. That’s two hours of rabbits grunting at me for taking the nibblers LOL.
