› Forum › DIET & CARE › Update: GI stasis again!
With perfect timing, Theodore decided to stop eating just as I left to go home for 2 days!
So I’m at home, texting my housemates and willing him to eat!
He seemed a bit off this morning, but I saw him eat some hay and pellets so I figured I was imagining the problem. But it turns out he hasn’t eaten anything more since then.
Its pretty stressful because I’m not there. It looks like I’ll be going back early (annoying seeing as I just got home to see my family) to take him to the vet. I really hope it’s not full blown stasis… I’m getting flashbacks from last time…
They say he’s pooped a little bit but hasn’t eaten very much. They’re going to update me in the morning. Fingers crossed he eats and poops overnight!
Did you ever have a fecal test done? I know he saw the vet for his check up.
No, not in the end, we’ve had no issues with him since then. He had a worming treatment as a precaution though.
I’m sorry your bunny is unwell. Let us know what the update is. (((((Theodore))))
Sorry to see he’s under the weather! How is he doing now?
Been to the vet; she said he’s not too bad, his vitals are all good.
He had an injection and some meds, and I’m bringing him back again tomorrow if he hasn’t improved.
I’ve seen him nibble a tiny bit of hay, and he’s hopping about a bit, but I’m really stressing and worrying after last time!
(((((Theodore)))))
How stressful! Mine always seem to stop eating when I’m away too – pets always have good timing like that. Glad he’s feeling a bit better now.
Oh keep us posted Tessie!! Vibes for Theo!
Got an update for you all!
This morning Teddy was the same, a bit worse, less active, just huddled up, poor bunny
I was really worried all morning.
So we went to the vet this afternoon and my vet said that he’d gotten significantly more bloated overnight which worried her. Also with it being Friday she was concerned that if there’s problems over the weekend that it might be harder to get to the vets.
So we were referred and sent straight to the Royal Veterinary College!
It was a bit scary to be sent to a big place, but they have 24h care and rabbit specialist vets and nurses.
The vets (I got two!) were very nice, had a look at him, and they’ve admitted him for the weekend!
It was sad saying goodbye but he’s in excellent hands and I can visit him tomorrow and see his little kennel.
Big stressful day, but I’m feeling positive about it all and now I need to work out how to claim on pet insurance, haha!
He’s in the best possible hands then, that’s a comfort. Good thing you have pet-insurance. I’ve never claimed it for my buns but I have for my dog. Most big clinic/animal hospitals here take care of this directly with your insurance-company for a small fee, but maybe that’s not how it works in England.
It’s a great thing to have a proper 24/7 animal-hospital nearby. I have one, and it’s a great resource. My dog fell ill on Pentecost Sunday =/
I’m sorry he’s taken a turn for the worse though, here are more vibes for him ((((((((Theodore)))))))
Oh glad he is getting such good care. Continued vibes for a speedy recovery!!
Oh Tessie, I just saw this – I can’t believe it???? Most people worry when their pet has to have a sleepover at the vet, but I don’t – knowing that they are in the best hands if the situation gets worse and can be dealt with immediately makes it more comforting for me. But I can imagine your fears (thoughts for Paddington). And Theodore is so new and precious (you must have worked out by now that he is MY favourite, lol!). And is Luna missing him? I’m sure she is. I’ll be thinking of you all and awaiting an update with everyone else. Take care Tessie.
Oh no … a second time? O.o. I remember when our bun had stasis last year. The feeling was terrible. I can’t imagine going through that a second time. Hang in there! Vibes for Theodore.
Thanks for all the support everyone, it means a lot. I’ll update tomorrow when I know more!
I’m so sorry you have to deal with this again. Is he pooping at all?
It sounds like he’s in good hands, I hope he has a speedy recovery! Sending lots of healing vibes.
So today the vets said that he still is no better and that they thought there might be an obstruction.
So they anesthetised Teddy to take x ray’s blood samples and try and relieve some of his gas.
So I went to go and see him, he was pretty sad poor bunny.
The x rays showed a really large amount so gas, it was like two balloons on him
Luckily there’s no obstruction so he doesn’t need surgery, but that does mean that the only thing we can do is continue with medicine and hope he gets better. :/
I’m not hugely hopeful at this point, because as I know, the longer it goes on, the worse it gets, and the meds haven’t worked so far..
But, I know that he’s in the best place he can be with the best chances he can get, and he’s well taken care of. He has an IV, painkillers, gut medicine, he’s being given critical care and lots of love and attention.
I’m pretty stressed and sad, but there’s still hope, and it’s good to know he’s being given every chance there is.
I’m glad I have Luna here with me.
Will update tomorrow when I hear more.
That’s good (and sad) news Tessie. Bunny hugs to Theodore! Take care and we still have you all in our thoughts.
I know how it feels with that uncertainty. I had lost hope when Kern had stasis.. just don’t stop being hopeful. He CAN pull through! Even when it gets to the point where you are certain he wont, he still has a chance. I know its hard to stay positive
Keeping you and Theodore in my thoughts and sending lots of vibes.
And try to stay hopeful and positive.
(((((VIBES)))))
Oh no! You will both be in our thoughts. Thankfully he is in the best hands though.
Update again, and a happy one today!
I got a call from the vet this morning, they said he’s started eating overnight!
I was pretty much expecting to hear that he’d passed away, so I was so happy, I cried a little haha
He’s not out of the woods yet, he’s still a sick bunny, but they can hear some gut sounds on him and he’s nibbled some hay and broccoli.
Yaaaaay!
That’s wonderful news!
More (((((((Vibes)))))) I’m keeping my fingers crossed for him. And for you, of course.
I’m glad to hear there was improvement. More ((((Get Well Vibes))))
To wake up this morning and read this good news – what a great way to start the day, thank you Tessie! Wishing Theodore a ‘speedy’ recovery so you can bring your big guy home asap. Cheers!
Wonderful!! Keep it up little Theodore!
Some progress is better than none! Glad you got a little bit of good news!
I hope Theodore is hanging in there! I’m going through a similar experience myself
Mr. Bun Bun hasn’t been eating normally for almost a week. I took him into the vet as soon as I realized it, and they didn’t make it seem like I needed to leave him there. And it was expensive so I took him home. They gave me SubQ fluids and critical care (along with a couple of other medications). I thought I was doing okay with it for the first few days, and he even ate a good amount of greens on Thursday night. But on Friday he was giving me such a fight. I had a follow up appointment on Saturday and decided to leave him there. He’s been there for over 48 hours. Today the vet said that he is eating more now but still hasn’t pooped. I think the last time he pooped was just a little bit on Thursday night/Friday morning.
I’m really worried about him because I didn’t even know this was a common problem in rabbits until now. I hope it didn’t take me too long to realize that something was wrong! Hoping to hear back from the vet within the next few hours.
Spoke to Teddy’s vet again!
They did more x rays to see how the gas is progressing but basically it’s the same as before.
They had a specialist in who thinks that he’s got some sort of problem with the bacteria in his gut gastrontestinal something… (But I think this is the G.I part of G.I. Stasis?) which has the vets a bit more worried. But the specialist reckons that the treatment they’re giving him is good.
On the plus side he’s eating a little bit on his own and he’s pooping a little bit too, so it’s slow progress, and he’s not out of danger yet, but at least it’s progress.
They reckon he’ll be in hospital at least a week, poor baby. But they said he’s confident and relaxed and the nurses love him.
I’m going to visit him tomorrow!
Thanks everyone for all the happy vibes!
Glad to hear he is doing alittle better! Keep it up bunny boy!
Bunny cuddle’s for Teddy from Henry and I when you visit him tomorrow.
Glad to hear he is a bit better! Hope he continues to improve, hugs and bunny kisses!
We got to visit my baby today!
He looks a little poorly still, but he seemed so much perkier than the other day, he was hopping about and exploring.
He’d also pulled his IV thing out somehow which I thought was funny and the vet said often they do when they start to feel better.
It was funny, the nurses said it just happened before I arrived and they were saying to Teddy: ‘You would pull it out just before your mum comes, what’s she going to think?!’
They said his poops are almost normal and they think he’ll be home by the end of the week!
So I’m very happy. I’d pretty much given up hope at the weekend and here we are! Thank goodness for the pet insurance.
I also think we’re going to change and make this vet our usual vet. They’re so nice, and their animal hospital facilities have been amazing, and because they have three exotics vets including a surgeon on their team.
He was happy to see me, I must have smelt like home, he came up to me and flopped straight away
So glad he’s doing better!
Aww, poor little Teddy. Glad he is improving.
Aw this is good news though! Hope he comes home soon and so glad you got to visit!
I’m glad he is feeling better and that you got to visit him.
I just read this sorry I didn’t get a chance to reply before. I am glad to hear he is feeling better. In your picture he looks like he enjoyed seeing you.
That’s wonderful Tessie! Teddy looks sooo happy. Cheers.
Just thought I’d share our great news!
Pending a good day tomorrow and the vets being happy, we’re hoping to bring Teddy home tomorrow afternoon!
YAY! Wonderful news! Finger’s and toes crossed Tessie.
