Okay, so I have an overweight mini rex bunny. She’s almost 4 years old. I’m not sure how much vegetables and pellets I should really be feeding her. Even though she’s overweight, she can’t weigh more than 5 or 6 pounds and she has an entire room to run in 24/7. I’m trying to get her to drop the extra pound or two, but I also want her to be eating enough.

Do you know she is overweight? Has the vet said so? Or do you just think she looks it? Rex bunnies can look very … thick, even if they are of proper weight, depending on how they are sitting. Before putting her on a diet, I would make sure she is actually overweight first by having a vet weigh her and such. Plus, you’ll want to know exact weight to monitor that she doesn’t lose too much.

But, what I feed my rex is her and her bond mate get 1/2 cup of pellets between the two of them and they get a big salad per day (I don’t measure it, I just put it on a regular dinner plate) and unlimited hay. Fruit, they get a little bit of apple, banana or a couple of craisins for treats every so often.

I haven’t had her weighed, but even stretched out she is noticeably fat. She has rolls and her stomach hangs and she has no discernible waist.

Well, to do a proper diet on her you need to know her ideal weight and her current weight. You don’t want to take her too low and bunnies can be really hard, especially mini-rexes, to tell when they are at the “right” weight. Below is my rex when she’s at the right weight. We call her chubby bunny just because she looks so much thicker than my other one, even though the vet says she’s at a good weight. To weigh her you can just weigh yourself, then pick her up and weigh yourself again then subtract the original from the with-bunny weight. Do you know what weight she should be from previous check ups?
