They have been living in cages next to each other for about a week and a half now, and I also swapped their litter trays over several times. When out of the cages, I divide the room in half with a fence so they can still see each other. They seemed fine with each other through the fence so today I decided to take it away. At first they snuggled a little and seemed OK. Then they started chasing each other, running around in circles. They didn’t seem to Be fighting or even nipping. Then the male began grunting and trying to mount the female. This completely stressed her out and she started trying to get away- and fighting back! They are both neutered so is this still natural? Will it always happen when they are together? Or can I stop him trying to mount her?

The room they have run of isn’t neutral territory. You need to start in neutral space (where neither have been before), and do the bonding sessions there before moving on.
