Arpeggio passed away yesterday… And I’ve come to realize it really was my fault. I fed him spinach for three days straight, along with his hay and pellets… It killed his good bacteria and the bad bacteria flourished… His entire body was infected… It’s my fault my baby is gone… How can I cope? I miss him so much and knowing it’s my fault is so crippling. I was supposed to be his momma.. ): I just need some support… I miss him so very much. He touched my heart.

RIP baby, momma loves you.. You were only here for a little while, but you definitely left your mark.. I’m so sorry baby.

I’m sorry your baby is gone. I love the Californian rabbits too – he was very beautiful.

Is that what the vet said about the spinach and good/bad bacteria? Because I’ll be honest, that does not sound right to me.

            I’m so sorry.

Once I read why you think it was your fault, I had to look it up myself. I did find where we should be careful not to overdo spinach for a couple reasons, and yes, including promotion of bad bacteria. I honestly don’t think 3 days would have caused such a rapid decline. He never displayed any diarrhea, which he should have if it was the bacteria issue. There must have been something else going on that wasn’t obvious or detectable. And we all know how well they hide illnesses and injuries. I hope this may help assuage your guilt.

You loved him and definitely did your best to provide him everything he needed and to make him happy. I’m sure he knew that he was loved.

I am sorry you lost your bunny. I agree with Sarita that doesn’t sound right either. When I got my first rabbit and he was old enough to eat veggies. I once bought a spinach and some other veggie mix and fed it to him for several days in a row and he was fine. Please try not to be so hard on yourself perhaps it was something else. I know that whatever the reason he passed it hurts. My heart goes out to you. I hope you can find the peace you need. I know you did the best to take care of him.

I’m so very sorry for your loss! I agree with the others. I don’t think you did anything wrong and this certainly wasn’t your fault. Him eating spinach 3 days in a row would not cause such a rapid decline. So don’t blame yourself. You loved him and I’m sure you were a very good bunny mom. Sometimes these things just happen and we don’t know why. =(

I’m sorry for your loss. I can’t provide any valuable info on the food intake.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I agree with the others, bacterial overgrowth would first cause a bad case of poopy butt. There can be salmonella on spinach but salmonella would also give diarrhea as a first symptom.

I’ve given Bam, who has a sensitive stomach, spinach for more than three days in a row (I didn’t know you shouldn’t) without him reacting badly to it.

I don’t think the diet caused the death of little Arpeggio, so don’t blame yourself. You loved him. He was incredibly cute. It’s so sad.

Edit: Now I’ve read your thread about his illness. It absolutely doesn’t sound like sth that could be caused by spinach. Maybe he hurt his foot somehow, then had a gut slow-down, that can happen when a bunny is in pain. The small poop is indicative of a gut slowdown.

I’m so sorry for you, again.

Please CheyBunny17 don’t put this on yourself, grieving is hard enough to deal with/get through. Living with the thought you caused a death (when you didn’t) is horrendous – don’t do that to yourself! and I know Arpeggio wouldn’t want this for you.
Just like bam, I bought my boy a bunch a spinach and fed it to him till it was gone, well over a week straight (I didn’t know either) and he didn’t have any ill effects. It was just Arpeggio’s time – and why? It doesn’t matter now – all’s that matters is Arpeggio’s time with you was full of love and happiness. Arpeggio was lucky to have you as his mum, you were luckier – you got to have Arpeggio in your life too – always remember that and cherish it! Take care CheyBunny17.

                          My condolences about Arpeggio.

I think if spinach was that lethal in that short a time, it would have been on the No-No list of vegetables provided by the HRS for years. It’s just not the case, and GI issues are the single most common cause of death in rabbits – not due to what they are fed, but due to their being easy to malfunction and harbor illnesses undetected.

                          If you learn from this, and get another bunny someday, I can assure you that you will be the bestest bunny mom in the world. All it really means is that you will notice the subtle behavior associated with illness sooner, and will get to the vet asap. Which still doesn’t help everytime, so please know you are doing your best with what you know. {{{{{{{{{{Hugs}}}}}}}}

I’m so sorry for your loss, it does hurt so much. Our bun developed GI Stasis from what our vet had deduced was the new Escarole we gave him. They told us all buns are different and react differently to certain greens. That next time give him a little and then wait a few days to see if there is a reaction.

My heart really goes out to you and i agree with many others here, don’t blame yourself. You did not purposely hurt your bun, you loved them and did everything you could when you knew they were sick.

My bun eats small amount of spinach once per day, around 4-5 days each week. Seems to be healthy. I don’t understand how spinach can cause a rabbit to die. Did you feed so much your rabbit didn’t eat pellets and hay? Hope you get over this.

Standard procedure, spinach contains oxalic acic so it should always be given in moderation. In addition, baby-leaf spinach sometimes have salmonella or other unpleasant bacteria on them due to how the plants have been watered or otherwise handled before harvest/ packaging.

Spinach didn’t kill this bunny. I think Arpeggio’s momma just tried to think of a reason why he died and was afraid she’d caused it herself by giving him spinach.

This is an old thread so we shouldn’t write in it, I just wanted to explain about spinach since you were wondering.

bam is right – this is an old thread and it is in the Rainbow Bridge so it is not appropriate to pull up and ask questions such as this since it is a memorial to someone’s rabbit.

Feel free to start your own thread with questions.
