Alby got neutered today and has been home for about 2 hours. The vet closed his incision with buried sutures/ surgical glue.
He seems to be licking the area a lot (about 3-4 times in 2 hours), but its hard to tell because he does it in a way that blocks my view, so I can’t tell if he’s grooming to the side of it, or the actual incision area.

Since his vet is now closed until tomorrow morning, is there anything I can do to prevent him from licking that area until we can get a cone? I’ve tried petting him, telling him no and putting my hands over his ears, but he just ignores me and keeps licking. I also don’t think he would do well with a cone, so I’d like to avoid that if possible.

My bunnies have done a lot of licking after surgery and somehow managed not to cause any major damage. Obviously, keep an eye on it and call to touch base with the vet when they open, but this licking should calm down over, maybe, the next 12-24 hours. He may just be cleaning the area from all the fur plucking and scrubbing they did and it’s no doubt irritating. I’ve never seen a bunny have a cone and cannot imagine how that would be. Yikes! Hope he stops licking really soon

As long as it’s just licking, it probably won’t hurt anything. Chewing is another story though. Keep an eye on it. Hopefully he will stop licking after a day.
