So, it’s sort of a long story, but I now have another bunny! (I’ll introduce him properly soon, promise!)

So I think I know the answer of this question, but I’m just sort of checking. I’m supposed to give unlimited pellets to babies right?
The woman I got him from (doesn’t feed her rabbits correctly anyway) said to only give him a handful of pellets a day. Now, I’m fairly sure I know that that’s wrong, but I’m just making sure.

The thing is, she said if I give him too many pellets he’ll get bloat and die…
So, obviously after Paddington died of what was GI stasis and then turned into bloat, I guess she made me second guess myself?
Is there some truth in what she said? Should I avoid giving him too many pellets?
I guess after the experience I had I’m just confused.

If someone could just reassure me, that would be wonderful.

I’ve never heard of them getting bloat and dying. However your switching from limited to unlimited here, so you’ll want to make sure he eats a bit of pellets and goes to do other things. If you put a big bowl of pellets down and he makes it his mission to eat them all, you’ll have to do small feedings of pellets throughout the day to make sure he’s eating enough, but isn’t doing it in one sitting. If he eats slowly and does other things, eats hay and veggies, then your fine to give unlimited!

I really, really, really don’t want to sound nasty here, but since you’re second-guessing yourself, I just wanted to put out there that I’m not sure how well-bred Paddington was.

He very well could have been bred very well! He was unique-looking and a beautiful rabbit and a good pick on your part, but I am just saying this because I don’t want you to question yourself at all. You did a really good job with him =/ I think there’s a good chance it was 100% out of your hands, possibly even genetic destiny, because he was unique-looking I question the goals of the breeder. I don’t know how well you knew the breeder where you got him, maybe I’m totally wrong. Either way, enjoy your new bun and try not to let that experience color it, and I hope I’m sounding like I hope I am. I am really trying to be NICE but truthful and not mean.

Thanks Sue, you don’t sound mean at all.
I didn’t know the lady we got him from, they were just a family, they seemed nice… I don’t know what counts as ‘good breeding’ anyway.
I think maybe we were just unlucky with Paddington. I don’t know.

Anyway, if I understand you right, you’re saying it’s not my fault and not to worry, so that’s probably what I needed to hear, thank you.

I agree with Zombie-Sue. There could have been something wrong with Paddington that you would have had no way of knowing about. So don’t blame yourself and don’t second guess yourself. Feeding your baby bun unlimited pellets is correct. As KK mentioned, it might be a good idea to gradually increase his pellets though. Just so he isn’t gorging himself.
