This September I rescued a baby bunny that otherwise would have gone to a pretty bad home and I have been using this website ever since! I’m a college student and I live alone so my bun has had a lot of one-on-one attention and is totally comfortable around me. I don’t keep him in a cage and he uses a litter box just fine. The only problem is I have worked at a summer camp for the last five years and I’m going back this summer. It’s not until June so I’ve got some time but I’ve been really worried about how he might react if I’m not with him for seven weeks! I originally thought I’d take him with me but after some research and finding out 80 degrees or higher is hard on rabbits, I realized that wasn’t an option. (It’s not uncommon for days at camp to be over 100 degrees.) Right now I plan on having my younger sister take care of him but will not having me there all summer cause him to forget about me, attitude/behavior changes after I come back, etc? He won’t even be a year old yet when I have to go… Has anyone had any experience with something like this?

It just sucks because I love this bunny so much and unfortunately not everyone understands or has the patience for rabbits… my mom (who my sister still lives with) is one of those people and insists he stays in a cage when he visits her house. So I’m also worried how he’ll react if he does end up having to stay with my sister and be in a cage more often than not when he’s totally not used to that. Any experience with this??

Please don’t respond with “just don’t go to the camp” because I’m going. I’ve gone every summer for thirteen years as a camper or staff member and it’s probably my last summer since I’m graduating from college this year.

Anyway… thanks in advance for any help or similar experiences!

I suggest you get your sister acquainted with your bunny as much as you can before you go. It will be easier for him if she is not a stranger to him. Make sure she knows the warning signs of when to call the vet. That is always my first piece of advice when leaving a bunny with a sitter.

Your bunny will not forget about you. I’ve never been gone for more than a couple of weeks but there are members here who have.

Will he be allowed out of his cage at all at your Moms?

Porky has always done just fine being left with a caring bunny sitter. He’s always happy to see us when we get home.
