Just recently I got a new member of the family. She is a lion head rabbit named Abu (monkey off of Aladdin). I have had her for a few weeks and everything has been fine. I care for her properly, grooming her daily, she always has fresh water, fresh pellet food and fresh alfalfa. Just the other day I thought that she was hopping funny, but I didn’t think anything of it because she shows no signs of pain. Let me inform you that she is very energetic and she loves running around my room and getting her exercise in. She gets at least 4 hours daily to explore outside her cage and run around wild.

Now, the reason for this post is a little different, I would say. Just today while Abu was running around I saw what I thought was a piece of alfalfa hay stuck to the side of her right foot. I was wrong. It was not alfalfa, but in fact a bone. I think that when my bunny was first born that she came out feet first and broke her leg on the way out. It popped out of her skin and then healed that way. This doesn’t seem to bother her whatsoever and she seems to have adjusted to the jumping and is mobile just on her own and very fast too. The bone healed very thick and sturdy and seems to be perfectly fine other than the fact that part of it is outside of her leg. It happened so long ago that not only is she fine, but she is also starting to grow hair on this bone. I called the vet shortly after I discovered this and talked to someone about what was going on. She didn’t seem too concerned for Abu, considering that she is hopping, eating, drinking and exercising like a normal bunny should. She also said that it was probably fine because it is common in the wild with rabbits and she isn’t surprised that it happened in captivity. The girl I spoke to was only concerned about her getting an infection in the bone, but when I told her that it happened so long ago that the bone has literally started to grow it’s own hair, she seemed to not be concerned at all. I plan on taking her in for an exam and what not as soon as she can get in.

In the meantime though, I was wondering if anyone has also dealt with the same thing. Has anyone had a rabbit that broke its leg and healed before it could’ve been fixed and if so, how did your rabbit do? She seems fine other than the fact that she hops just a little awkwardly. I’m really concerned for her and hearing other stories would just make me feel a little better about it.

Would it be possible to see a picture?

I’m finding this hard to believe (I don’t mean that I don’t believe you, just that I can’t imagine such a thing, haha!)
          You’re sure it’s a bone?

How did you manage to have her a few weeks before noticing this?  Is is a really tiny bone?

Why didn’t you take her to the vet?

Maybe this is actually common and I’m just oblivious, but I find it bizarre that your vet wasn’t concerned?
Someone else here will probably know better than me!

If it were me, I would take her to the vet asap, because I wouldn’t trust something like that just being described over the phone.
But it’s good that she doesn’t seem too bothered by it I suppose

          You’re definitely sure it’s a bone?
(Sorry, I can’t get over this!)  haha

I agree with Tessie. That is very strange and I would see a vet. I’m curious to see it as well.
