so… my lovely friend got herself a bunny… even after i explained to her how delicate they are and how much work they are! she is a model and at a shoot, they were using dwarf buns as “props” on the grass in a picnic basket or something… so she flirted with the breeder and he gave her a bunny(5/6week old -what he says is a-female) this was 2 days ago! she got all excitied about babies and veggies and then i set her down, explained in detail how the bunny is too young and that she would have to be spayed and that with all her traveling, she could take her along etc. i already had to rehome a few fish a yorkshire terrier and chinchilla she got from some shoot/friend/ boyfriend! so she listened and took the bun back to the breeder who said that the mom would not accept the bun back and he doesnt have time to raise such a small baby! (is that true? that the mom wont take her back) anyway… i cant take in another bun, mango is very territorial and he is only being altered end of feb(6months old then). i have no clue what to do now!!! the spca sends buns to a farm outside of town, cause no one here adopts bunnies(when i went to look for a mate for mango-before i knew how hard bonding was, they said theyd phone if any came in, but they usually dont get them or hold them) so what now? should i make her take the bun to spca anyway? or is there a chance the mom would allow her back if i maybe spoke to the breeder myself? (a girl in her late 20’s should not be this ignorant)

Oh niniliefie!!!! Besides saying how awful this situation is (poor bunny) – I have absolutely no idea? As far as mum taking the baby back? The last litter of (dog) pups I had, I told friends and family if you want one of ‘my’ pups (you’d think I gave birth to them, lol) this is it. Anyhow, because of my uncle moving we got ‘Mitch’ back a week later for 3 days and mum, dad and son acted just like 3 dogs together. I know dogs and bunny’s are different, but that’s all I could think of. They didn’t act like family? No rejection – if anything we just had to introduce them (gee a week is a long time in doggy days), and all was good. He has been for a few visits since and no probs. Again, I’m guessing the reintroduction of bunnies will be very different to my experience, but I can’t help but wonder, is the breeder just looking for an excuse ‘not’ to take baby bunny back? Outside of that – I wouldn’t know what to do? Again, how awful – but how good are you, helping your friend out. Poor bunny!

Buns should be weaned at 7/8 weeks but can be weaned as early as 4 weeks (obviously the worst scenario), however they should never leave before 8 weeks, in case weaning enteris happens.

The breeder should be able to take the bun back absolutely, because
            A) if the bun is weaned, it shouldn’t have to live with the mom
            B) if it isn’t, why was he selling it?
Sounds like a pretty stupid guy. Try and find a rescue – the bun could go into weaning enteris and it’s not a fun process…either that or a reputable breeder who’ll be able to take the baby, care for it and such.

            Best of luck.

Oh AndHenry! You are such a people person! Always have a story and an encouraging word or 10! Really enjoy your posts. CBL, I told her baby was too small but she never ever listens! Good news and Bad news though… I got a call to come fetch the “thing” (just like the yorki who ate her D&G handbag).so off I went 1h30min on the road and what a messssssss! Baba had a runny eye and his bum and hind legs were soiled!(In 2days in her care?) I saw trouble, so took him to the exotic vet(a block from her house-i used to live close by and take my chameleons to this vet) ANYWAY, the vet says it looks bad, baby has a runny tummy and it looks like he has a pretty big scratch in his/her left eye. Also she suspects bun isn’t more than 4 weeks old(this breeder/supplier must be a very bad person to do this) so a shot, and a clean-up and $250 (mango hasn’t cost me that in all the time I’ve had him incl his neuter end of feb) baba looked a bit better, but the vet recommended an overnight stay, maybe 2 cause she/he is so small! So… And here’s the good news… I told doc the story and that I don’t really have the capacity to adopt another bun cause mango and I just sorted each other and he is (and will be till a month after his altering end of feb, if I understand correctly) a ball of hormones. So the Doc, in her 40’s and who raises chinchillas… Said she would love to take the bun(although she doesn’t usually do this) cause her 16 year old has started working with the chins(who are a LOT of work) (they currently take in chins who are “so cute” and then owners can’t handle them) and she thinks the bun will be a good addition to their family and keep her busy, cause the 16 year old has started taking over main duties with the baby chins! She didn’t even charge me for the visit and will update me! (So atleast if the baby makes it, it will have a nice home) I also warned my dear little ignorant friend that the next time she takes in a pet and can’t take care of it, I’d send the spca and leak the story to a friend in her “inner circle” that she abuses pets(I think its an empty threat, but she doesn’t know that)

So here is hoping that “newbe”(new beginnings is what the vet named him/her) survives the night and lives happily.

$250 incl the 1/2 night stay, all the meds and goodies required(sounds a lot for just a shot and some meds)

Vibes to the baby bun. I hope he recovers.

Glad you figured out a home for him. Sounds like a great fit! Much better than going back to the breeder who sounds really irresponsible.

                    That’s wonderful!
                    What a mircale, eh?

What luck that you happened to take Newby to that vet! And what a wonderful vet too! I’m just… wow.
                    So pleased.

Good for you for doing the right thing.
Hoping for a good recovery for Newby!

So sorry that you have a friend like this…mostly because my best friend is VERY similar except being a model part. First she got a guinea pig…then because her birthday was coming up her uncle wanted to give her a puppy so she rehomed the guinea pig. Then she got the puppy (the family already had a 6 month old black lab/pitty mix full of energy). Then she realized that 8 week old puppies aren’t so cute and cuddly when you have to take them outside every 20 minutes or so because they have to pee. On top of whining and moderating the play time with their current puppy. So then she went to florida with her family for a week or so and she had one of her friends come watch the puppy (even though she knows I love dogs and would’ve been more than happy to do it for her). So day 2 of the friend watching the puppy she texts me at like 3am complaining because the puppy is whining and has to pee really bad but doesn’t want to take the puppy outside (WHAT?!). So I call my best friend the next day to ask what the problem was and she told me what I just told you and i’m like are you kidding me? That’s so ridiculous and she wasn’t happy either (though I know she does the same thing and in the mornings her mom would take the puppy outside not her because she would still be sleeping). So then she rehomed the puppy to this very friend that complained about the whining (WHAT??!!?!?!) even though I told her not to and to take it to a non-kill rescue. Then not too long ago she wanted to get a bird of some kind (can’t remember what) thank god a roommate used to have birds and told her not to get it because of such and such reasons. She listened surprisingly and didn’t get the bird but it’s like you rehomed your guinea pig you rehomed your puppy and you think it’s a good idea to try to get another pet?!!?!?. Then when i got my bunny she’s like maybe I should get a bunny (she used to have some they lived outside at all times) and I was like NO NO NO NO. I love her to death but it’s like home many animals have to be rehomed before you get it through your head that they aren’t disposable?

What a happy ending!! You are a very good person to do all the running around and cleaning up your friends mess!! Lucky bunny to go live with a vet! And I have to say Kudos for not taking this bun on, it’s hard to say no, but I think you did wonderful in not doing so and making sure to find such a good home!!
