Alfie (about 10 weeks) had his calicivirus vaccination yesterday arvo. Today he seems lethargic and depressed in a way…

He is usually very energetic and bouncy, he is very cuddly, licky, and weed on me!

Is the vaccination causing his lethargy do you think? Maybe a larger dose than he needed? He also has a clicky hip/leg that we are watching closely (doesn’t seems to bother him normally) and not sure if its related.

        Thanks!

Some of my rabbits are a bit off the day after their vaccs. They were fine after the first one but reacted more after the booster shots.

This is Alfies first one? (I can’t quite remember, don’t baby rabbits need 2 shots within a short time period?)

Since he has the leg issue, it’s probably worth ringing the vet to ask if it could be this and about normal reactions you’d expect to see after vaccination. If they’re concerned also, they might suggest a recheck. This can be a short appt with minimal or no charge.

            (((Alfie)))

What vaccines do is challenge the immune-system and make it start producing antibodies. That’s why you or your pet may feel a little bit under the weather after getting a vaccine-shot of any kind. If it’s just a mild reaction it’s perfectly normal, but if it’s more severe it could be f ex an allergy to sth in the vaccine. Bam had a reaction the first time he had a combined calici/myxi-shot. He got sores in his ears and under one eye. He didn’t need treatment by a vet, but I called them and they said to come in if he seemed ill (he never seemed ill). They would’ve given him cortisone if we’d had to come in.

My dog gets upset stomach after her vaccinations. That’s common. Even low-grade fever may occur. It’s like that in people too. It means the vaccine is doing it’s job.

Hope Alfie perks up soon! You could always call your vet and tell them and ask for advice just to feel safer.

Yep – Jersey is right (here in Australia) baby bunnies get the 2 shots within a week. Henry got his first shot for calicivirus (not Myxo, not available here) while he was being neutered, and his second dose when he went back for his neuter check up. The first one I didn’t notice – obviously…. but the second one, yes – he was quiet for about a day. (Thought he was angry for being jabbed?), but just like babies – I always remember giving panadol after a vaccination, so I imagine bunny’s can/would react the same.

Hmmm, this makes me a bit nervous. My vet in Sydney only gave Rufus the one shot for his first vaccination. Do you think I need to call up and ask about it?

Also, I once had five vaccination shots in one day (before going travelling through South America) I went down like a tonne of bricks! It was the worst I have ever felt in my entire life so I’m sure it would be normal to be feeling just a bit off. Has he perked up a bit now?

Hey Rufus, yes – I’d give the vet a quick call.
                    Hope your move went well???

Yeah, I’ll call them later today.

[I didn’t end up moving yet, thanks for asking! The date got pushed till next Thursday so for now I’m just packing. I decided to move Rufus still in his old cage so that’s taken a lot of stress off. I’ll move him to his new cage a bit later.] sorry to hijack your thread a little there, LolasMummy!

Bam only had one shot for his first vaccination because he was adult. The vet said it was ok to have the second one 6 months later. But of course you should call your vet and ask.

Bam’s second vaccinations were given 4 weeks apart, because of the adverse reaction. He didn’t get any adverse reactions then but now they’ve a new vaccine so now I’m starting to get fearful again, the shot is due in March. Yeah well, you can never worry quite enough about your bunbuns, can you? =/

                        How is Alfie doing?
