So let’s say I went out into the garden and pulled some twigs from the citrus/apple/willow tree. How would I go about preparing them? Do I need to bake them? Can anyone talk me through the steps? Thank you!

I was lucky enough to get some apple sticks from my aunty. I scrubbed them down really well with plain water, then baked them in the over for 30 minutes on 120 degrees Celsius. Sheldon’s been absolutely loving them! Hope that helps

It rather depends on where you live. I give my buns apple-twigs and willow fresh from the trees. I live in Sweden. I’ve done this for more than two years and my bunnies are fine. But if your trees are treated with pesticides or if you live in a tropic/hot area with lots of insects and stuff, you should perhaps wash and/or bake your twigs. Also if you live in Australia there is a very slight risk there could be myxomatosis-virus on plants, (although not likely up in trees, at least not on the branches a yard or more off the ground), then perhaps you should bake the twigs as well.

Some pesticides are systemic, i e they enter into the plants, so material from pesticide-treated trees really should not be fed at all. Willow are seldom treated with anything. Citrus I have no idea about, citrus don’t grow in my country except in hot-houses. I wish it did.

Untreated apple/willow/citrus branches are safe to feed fresh BUT I’ve heard of some people baking them at 160 to kill bacteria/parasites.

At last! A Bunny named Sheldon, Valisa. Love that name. Had it picked out for a cutie at the shelter, then he died under anesthesia when they sent him to be neutered 🙁 Ended up with a female and didn’t want to use Penny (ha ha), so Sheldon remains unused, except in my heart, where I still think about him.
