mango has to travel with me next weekend! we are all going to my sisters house for her gusbands 30th birthday!!! im driving my mom and gran down on the friday and we are staying at their house! (luckilyt the party wont be there) they are big pet people and has even revamped a 2m/2m/1m cage they have so mango has a spacious spot(seeing as his cage at home wont fit in my grans car even if it is collapsed. he will be staying in a room of his own where their pets never go! so its relatively organised. i just need some advice on the 3 hour trip itself(do’s, dont’s etc) he’ll travel in an animal carrier with his fleece blacket and waterbottel in a sock- with some hay pellets and greens. (ill do water stops every hour and the green will be drenched in water) is there anything elese i can do to make him more comfy? its his first travel.

also… they have a scotty, waaimeraner and 2 very very loud umbrella cockatoos. they wont be able to reach him and he is fairly use to barking(we have a greatdaine. but the screaming that those birds do is something horrible!!! will it stress him out and if so… is there something i can give to calm him?

id prefer to leave him home and let someone watch him, but for some reason everyone is going away on the same weekend. everyone i trust with him atleast!

any advice will be greatly appreciated! i have a week to prepare!!!

I have traveled with my bunny about 3 times. Each of those trips were about 1 hour and 30 min long. He handled it fine. He probably won’t be doing much eating (at least mine doesn’t) because the car kinda shakes and bounces due to the roads they pretty much remain still to stay balanced. I don’t even think my bun uses the bathroom until we reach our destination. Haha
I talk to my bunny on the rides too! I don’t know if that calms him down, but I give it a try! Lol

Umbrella cockatoos? We have ‘cockatoo’s’ and I thought they were native to Australia? Obviously not! (I really should have listened more in school) ha ha hah… Do you mind me asking why ‘umbrella’? Sorry – really curious?
Ok getting back to Mango and your drive (lol)….. I reckon you got it all worked out! I also (think?) he may not want to eat much, so maybe a small amount of greens and pellets (cause who knows – every bun is different, he may?), but I think maybe some hay? Everyone suggests that’s always best for bunny’s belly – so if he gets car sickness, it may help his belly.
The strange loud noises? He’ll work it out/get over it after a bit, no different to Mango being at home with the barking dogs. Henry can tolerate the dogs barking right next to him without flinching, and any new noise – he does react, but after a bit he’s all good. I think once he works out no one/thing is after him for their dinner he’s all ok with it. I’m sure Mango will be fine. But I totally get your concern – this is a first for both of you. Have a ‘great’ time at your brother in law’s party! As sealyah suggested, talk to Mango on your trip – if he doesn’t respond, threaten to sing to him, (if your as bad as me) he will tell you to shut up in no time, ha ha hah ha!

We are leaving again soon and although he took a while… Mango is a trooper! Umbrella cockatoos are just a subtype(with broud feathers on the head instead of the thin yellow piece) BUT what yall see as a plague, is considered exotic here we pay about $750-$1000 for one! Hahaha and these 2 are spoilt and very tame! (Jango-the male- opens a 2l bottle with liTtle effort and drinks(sip by sip) the last few drops! Hahaha) anyway… The trip has made me old and I think the stress on mango was too much! If I can’t find a friend nexr time I travel, and mom can’t take him in or go over to my house(lucky to live only 6km from her) ill pay “pet minders” to watch him! Don’t think traveling with him is fair on him and its NOT good for me! Hahaha (too young for grey hair)

Thanx for the advice and care. Keep us in your thoughts and prayers for the journey home!

Ha ha ha ha niniliefie – reading your last post, I’m thinking huh? your on your way home – did I miss something? And I sure did (slapping my forehead!). I didn’t even think to check to date on your forum let alone think to scroll down through the active topics and see/read your ‘updated’ forums!
So no – I haven’t gone mad (some may disagree) I was just behind the times lol, and I’m pleased it worked out even though it turned out to be stressful for you both. At least you know now for next time. I still hope you were able to enjoy the party.
Your cockatoo’s sound beautiful, thanks for letting me know the difference – I learned something other than bunny today! Cheers.
